Windows 10: DVD/CD SATA drive not reading disks

Since upgrading my SATA DVD/CD RW will not work. I insert a disk the light come on showing it is reading and than the drive opens and the pop up box appears stating "Insert Disk" . So I cannot install any of my software. I have read that a lot of people are having the same problem.
I went into Device Manager and it show this device is working, the drivers show 2006.
The Drive is TSST corp CDDCDW SH-203N. Has anyone figured out what to do to fix this.
So thankfully I am Dual booting and at least get some work done on the tried and true Win 7 Ult.

My DVD Player disappeared after windows 10 upgrade

I have been trying to find a solution to my CD DVD Rom has disapeared. I am begining to think this is a registger problem. This may be stupid but this is what I did. Of course I tried a new drives first - no results.

So here is what I did I typed in as you instructed this

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

Windows 10 in device manager correctly identified the drive which is IHAS 124-14 this by model number.

The drive which is not recognized is this Lite-On 24x Sata internal DVD+/-RW Drive Optical Drive iHAS 124-14. It worked since April, then disapeared POOF.

Windows 10 assumed the drive I requested in windows regristry is an ATAPI. Naturally is does not read a DVD disk. The lite turned on when a disk was put in the drive - and then turned off. MY DRIVE IS A SATA. I have looked and looked can find no reference
to a registry entry for SATA.

Do you have the registry entry for a SATA CD DVD drive. I think I will then have a solution. I said I think.

If a disk is not in the drive and you click the drive it will ask for media.

On the left pane right click the drive, properties, it should show "0" on both.

Insert a dvd or cd into the drive and see if it reads the contents, the drive should

show the media or if blank the empty size.

Win10 does not have a media player, vlc is a good free one.

Imgburn is good for creating some types of disks ( little

bit of a learning curve).

What interface does the drive use, usb sata or other.

If usb this could be a power management issue.

Win10 does have some basic disk burning abilities .

Other thing to check is device manager, expand dvd/cd rom drives and see if

the drive is listed.

 

Try the uninstall/reinstall and see if that helps.
Uninstall the drive in the Device Manager. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall it. May fix it.

The only drivers for CD and DVD drives are the built in Windows drivers.

 

My TSsT Corp sata DVD drive gave up the ghost at 2 year old, how old is it?

 

If it works in Windows 7, I'd assume that it's not broken.

A cruel suggestion: clean install Windows 10. As you have activated the upgrade, a clean install will activate on the same hardware.

That should get rid of most inappropriate Registry entries.

 

I updated the firmware that had no effect than removed it via device manager and rebooted. Upon reboot I thought I'd see the pop up for new found hardware but nope that did not work ! Guess I'll forget fooling with Win 1o and let MS figure out their bugs.

 

Try loading the chipset drivers for your IDE/SATA controller. I have an ASUS laptop that Win 10 loaded the generic IDE/SATA driver & had my DVD drive go missing. Installed the chip set drivers from AMD (in my case) and the system saw the drive and it works normally now.

 

The drive shows up in My Computer and in device manager as well and shows and working, but just spins and the light blinks and the spinning CD at the cursor winks every few seconds but does not stay then it hangs explores and I have to manually eject the disk to unfreeze explorer. A friend is bringing a known working DVD drive over to test, it works on her win 10 machine so I'll see if it's the drive which is a year old and used maybe 6 times.

Finally solved!! I had the same issue as Composerchick with my DVD writer (tsstcorp sh-s243n) after upgrading to Windows 10 and so thought I would reply with what finally resolved the issue for me.

After upgrading to Windows 10 my DVD drive would only read audio CDs (through Itunes), but Windows explorer would not show any files for the CD and the drive would not read any DVDs. I could not even access the drive through command prompt. The drive was showing in device manager as working properly and with best driver. My DVD drive worked fine when booting back into a Windows 7 OS so I knew this was not a hardware issue.

I have no idea how this happened but the "default value" for the following registry key was missing:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

The default value was blank and should have been DVD/CD-ROM. After putting the value in and rebooting, my drive was working properly again.

I found this in this support document related to Windows Vista (of all things!) with suggestions of changing upper/lower filters when I finally noticed the default values was missing. Follow instructions here:

Thanks for this fix, it worked for me but I had to use the value "DVD/CDROM" for my drive. Not sure if that was a typo or not but thought I'd mention it for anyone else who needs this info.

EDIT - Worked once, now broken again

 

My registry was also missing the default, but changing it did not fix my problem. Is there possibly different ways this should be entered in? My drive is a DVD-RW Drive.

 

Old thread. Anyone else find a permanent solution for this issue that appeared as soon as I installed Windows 10? Tried all the same fixes in this thread, including renaming the empty default value to DVD/CD-ROM and making sure upper/lower limits aren't there, reinstalling driver etc. No errors in device manager, drive displays correctly in my computer, but it will just spin up and not read any discs at all. Says "insert disc" even with discs in...
