Windows 10: DVD drive did not install but a floppy drive did (I don't have one)

I must apologize if I seem like I jump around and forget things. I am on medications that have greatly affected my memory, cognition, judgement, and critical thinking skills. I do not mean to deliberately mislead or omit important facts.

Found my drive is no longer manufactured, so of course no Windows 10 driver available.

 

*Sad For the most part, the user doesn't have to do anything to get a DVD/CD drive to work, but I guess there should be something Windows looks for to get it to run right.

 

I haven't seen an optical drive (CD, DVD) for years that required drivers other than those supplied by Microsoft.

If you can boot from the drive, I expect that your problem is only in Windows. Replacing the drive may fix things, but it may not.

Is your system based on the M3N-HT Deluxe that you list? If so, that uses the old (2008) nVidia 780a motherboard chipset. The newest drivers that I see for it at Visual Computing Leadership from NVIDIA are for Windows 7. There are newer ones available through the Microsoft Update Catalog, but those may be a bit of a pain to install manually for non-experts (like me).

I own an old (2008) laptop with an nVidia chipset. When I upgraded it from Vista to Windows 7, I had some trouble getting Windows to recognize the chipset, until I got an installer to run. Subsequently, all updates were automatically installed.

I think that your system is likely to be completely supported by Windows 10, but it may take some fiddlin' to get it all running properly. I think that it'll be worth the effort.

 

bobkn, thank you very much for the info! Yes I am running M3N-HT Deluxe and I basically understand what you are saying but I don't know where to begin. I don't have the slightest idea about how to upgrade a MB chipset. All I can find are video drivers and BIOS updates, which are both up to date now.

I guess this what Google is for - it's time to learn something new.

1) If the file you downloaded is just 1 file (Setup.exe) then copy that files to your C: partition

or

If the file you downloaded is like a zipped archive, then extract what is in it and put all the files in C: in one folder called Chip also

The reason I use chip is just for the ease of use in the next step

2) Press the START MENU button > All Programs > Accessories > then right click on Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator


3) In the Command Prompt, type:


- cd\ to back to the ROOT of c:
- cd chip to go into the folder Chip
- setup.exe -overall -overide then hit ENTER

 

I still can't find an updated MB chipset driver. I have found the old Win 7 64bit driver and nothing more up to date. The Microsoft Update Catalog does not seem to find anything.

 

NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.56WHQL try those better than nothing

What you can do is:

1. Download the nForce drivers for Windows 7
2. Extract the nForce drivers for Windows 7 to a folder with 7zip.
3. Do a driver update on the Coprocessor object in the Device Manager.
4. Browse to the folder you extracted the nForce drivers for Windows 7 at.
5. Choose the driver in the SMU folder.

This worked on a Windows 8.1 system with the nForce 730a chipset.

Did you have a working Windows 7 installation? Can you restore it?

Installing 10166 as an update over 7 may give a better result. (Haven't tried it, just guessing.)

 

No I was running Linux so I redid the partition and started Win 10 from scratch. No version of Windows to fall back on.
