  1. DVI-D to HDMI problem

My desktop (HP p7-1110) computer has been used for a few years with the monitor plugged into the VGA port.
    There's also a DVI-D port back there.
I've recently acquired a larger monitor and wish to send it an HDMI signal which the old monitor wasn't capable of.
I looked around the internet and ended with a cable from bestbuy that claims to be what I was looking for.
The desktop graphics with VGA are good on the newer monitor. Colors and definition are good.

When I connect the DVI-HDMI from the computer to the monitor, select HDMI as input on the monitor, I get
the existing wallpaper and the task bar with no icons only. No mouse pointer. No desktop icons.
All good if I select back to VGA as input.

Would somebody be so kind as to steer me in to what to look for?
I have some familiarity with device manager and have found nothing there to alter.

Or am I expecting something marvelous to appear in HD that VGA doesn't offer?
    Thanks.

    :)

    External monitor for laptop

It sounds like you'll need a HDMI to DVI-D Cable which should allow you to connect the laptop to the monitor.

This one is on a UK store but will give you an idea of what it is:

    DVI-D to HDMI problem

What is the brand of the Monitor ? you might want to download the driver for the Monitor from their website. In addition, also update the driver for the video card.
Look under Device Manager to see what display it set to.
Example: I have dual HP monitors and the drivers were installed for them.

  5. It's a DYNEX DX-L2210A. It's advertised as a TV monitor and was used as such in it's previous time in HDMI mode.

I attempted updating monitor drivers automatically in device mgr. Resulting in "Generic pnp monitor is up to date."

I've googled and duckduckgo'd with negative results.
    Thanks for jumping in.

OK. It's different when you use a TV as a PC Monitor, Some manufacturer such as Samsung would have the driver for it otherwise, the default would be "Generic pnp Monitor". In addition, according to this website:
    Dynex DX-L22-10A Specs - CNET
the TV spec is a 720p TV, the screen resolution that you can set is: 1366x768. So try to set the resolution for the display to this.
Since you use a DVI-HDMI adapter, you also won't get any audio on the TV.

That sounds like correct behavior for second monitor. Is that what you're doing? Hooking it up in addition to your primary monitor?

If so, you need to move the mouse over to the other screen to do things on it (drag windows, etc..)

Are you looking do duplicate the screen? If so, you need to go into advanced display properties and choose duplicate rather than "extend"

  8. DVI-D to HDMI problem

Lets see if I have this correct, DVI-D on video card to HDMI on monitor? Is that even possible? Normally, isn't it the other way around, HDMI on video card to DVI-D on the monitor?
Press the Windows logo key *Start + P and select PC screen only. And see what you get with only the new monitor connected. Unplug the VGA screen.
If your wanting to run both do the *Start + P and select Extend. With both monitors connected and turned on.

  9. 1360-768 resolution on the VGA connection.

From HP support: HP Pavilion p7-1110 Desktop PC Product Specifications | HP® Customer Support

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD Integrated graphics (DX10.1)*Integrated video is not available if a graphics card is installed.

    • Supports PCI Express x16 graphics cards
    • DVI and VGA ports (both ports can be used at the same time)

I have both connectors plugged in at the PC and the monitor and using the monitor's menu to switch from one to the other.
I have the sound out from the audio card to a stereo setup, so no need for audio via HDMI or VGA.

    Thanks for your replies

Does not matter which end is which. HDMI->DVI->HDMI just connect all the Video leads together. There's extra leads for Audio on the HDMI end which do not connect to anything.
BTW, new TV does not even have DVI port on it, just HDMI.

well you can have audio delivered via DVI-I/DVI-D if your card supports it, but yeah if no audio then the audio parts in the HDMI are "useless" in that scenario

  12. DVI does not have audio. HDMI does, but DVI doesn't. If your source is a DVI there is no audio signal. Not if you follow the specifications for DVI. In my case its HDMI to my monitors DVI. The audio part of my HDMI signal goes no where. It dead ends at the HDMI to DVI adapter on my monitor. I use PC speakers so its no big deal for me. I've just never heard of anybody doing it the other way around, DVI to HDMI. Just wondering if some wires get crossed up going that way. Of it a signal is lost?

  13. DVI-D to HDMI problem

Do you need a dual link DVI cable in this case? Since the source is HDMI? Single link DVI cables are minus a few wires.

EDIT: If the cable is all one piece, with no other adapter on the end, it likely doesn't matter. All the wires should be there for full functionality..

DVI supports audio in a DVI-to-HDMI -cabling, not the other way around (incase youd need HDMI-audio de-embedder, which no blank HDMI-to-DVI -adapter supports).
