Edge Drop Clipboard Manager Brings Mouse-Driven Copy Management to Windows 11

A new third-party clipboard manager for Windows 11 called Edge Drop is now available for early testing. Developed by AdiArtist, the app was recently shared on Reddit. It sits on the left side of the screen and can be opened by hovering the mouse over it or by pressing Alt+C.

Edge Drop supports text, images, and a variety of file types, automatically adding any copied item to its interface. The application can be downloaded from its website and GitHub. Currently, Edge Drop is in early development and is at version 0.1.0.

What Edge Drop Does And How It Compares to the Windows 11 Clipboard

Edge Drop is a clipboard manager that also provides basic file management features. Its main characteristics include staying tucked away on the left side of the screen until activated by mouse hover or the Alt+C keyboard shortcut, supporting text, images, and various file types, and automatically adding copied items to the interface.

Users can drag items directly into the app or use drag-and-drop to move files into Edge Drop and paste them elsewhere. The app also offers a stacking feature for organizing related content, making it easy to gather several files for future use. Currently, it does not allow combining different content types, such as text and images, within a single stack.

Windows 11 includes a built-in clipboard history feature, accessed with Win+V. It supports pinning items, syncing across devices, and keyboard navigation. In contrast, Edge Drop focuses on mouse interaction.

Its drag-and-drop capability makes it straightforward to collect multiple files and place them into organized stacks, which can then be pasted into other locations. While the stacking feature is useful for keeping related items together, it does not yet support mixing different content types in one stack.

Edge Drop serves as a mouse-oriented complement to the Windows clipboard. It offers a more natural way to handle files and content for creative projects, without replacing the keyboard-driven clipboard.

Both tools can be used together, as each caters to different workflows, with the built-in clipboard supporting cross-device sync and keyboard navigation, and Edge Drop providing a more visual, mouse-based approach.

Why the Edge Drop Name Is a Problem and How to Install the App

The app's name may need to change in the near future. Microsoft currently has a feature called Edge Drop, which is used for file sharing in the Edge browser. Although Microsoft is retiring the Edge Drop feature as Copilot takes over the sidebar, it is likely they will want to keep the name protected.

Users testing the app should be aware that a rebrand might happen, potentially involving changes to the app name, website, or GitHub repository in future releases.

To install and try Edge Drop:

    1. Visit the Edge Drop website at edgedrop.vercel.app.
    2. Download the app or get the release directly from the GitHub releases page.
    3. Install and run the app on Windows 11.
    4. Activate the interface by hovering the mouse over the left edge of the screen or pressing Alt+C.
    5. Copy items or drag files into the interface to start using it.

Since the app is in early development, currently at version 0.1.0, users should expect some bugs and incomplete features.

As a third-party app developed independently, it is not available through the Microsoft Store. Users should only download it from the official website or GitHub repository.

Who Should Use Edge Drop, Its Limitations, and Where to Get It

    For users considering Edge Drop:

The app is currently in an early preview stage and may not be entirely stable. Since it's a third-party tool downloaded outside the Microsoft Store, users should ensure they're getting it from the official source. Edge Drop is designed to complement the built-in Windows 11 clipboard rather than replace it.

Its mouse-focused interface makes it suitable for creative workflows and drag-and-drop tasks. The name might change in future versions to avoid conflict with Microsoft's Edge Drop feature.

For those who prefer keyboard workflows or need to sync clipboards across devices, the built-in Windows 11 clipboard remains the better option. Edge Drop may appeal to users looking for a mouse-driven clipboard with stacking and drag-and-drop organization.

Version 0.1.0 of Edge Drop is available now on the app's website and GitHub, and it is free to download. Development is ongoing, and future updates could include features like mixed-content stacks, support for more file types, and possibly a rebrand to differentiate from Microsoft's Edge Drop.

Users interested in the app's progress can follow the GitHub project for updates and releases. As an independent project, its development pace and direction depend on the creator, so users should not expect frequent updates or the same level of support as a commercial product.

Is it possible to enable old clipboard management in Windows 11?

Hello everyone, the new clipboard management in Windows 11 doesn't work very well as the one in Windows 10, the biggest problem is that we can't erase the history records using the keyboard, navigating with the arrow keys, for example, and this is horrible for someone who basically uses the keyboard for everything, like me.

My question is, is there a possibility that we can use clipboard management as it was in Windows 10 in Windows 11?

    Kind regards,

    Paulo de Tarso
