Windows 10: Edge/Explorer freezes up windows when I plug in second monitor

Sorry, I was also confused what the issue was until I dove deeper. It's definitely windows explorer that is going haywire when I plug in a second monitor. The event log is in the post above.

 

Ok. I see you posted that. You'll see that svchost.exe is common in Task Manager cuz that's a program that allows or "hosts" other programs to work. It's the FrameServer that may be tied to your video driver or system graphics.

Did you check Tablet mode?

 

Let me get this straight. So far, your lappy and secondary monitor work fine until you open Start menu, correct?

Does Start work without the secondary monitor connected?

Try going into Settings > Personalization > Start > to check out everything in there.

 

The laptop works fine with the start menu, nothing wrong here. When I plug in the second monitor, windows explorer goes nuts (sideways picture I sent) and the start menu will not work. The second monitor works fine with whatever I put over there, but I can't get to the start menu.

All looks fine in both. Basically what I have. I have to say > This is stumping me. I dual-monitor, but on a tower with no problems. Why on God's green earth would the Start menu affect your system?

Which onboard graphics do you have? It's listed in Device Manager > Display adapters.

Try setting the "appropriate mode for my hardware" to "Use desktop mode" in Tablet mode settings.

as my Display adaptor and the driver is updated.

 

Ok. You never did answer about which update. If it was the major Creators update you may want to roll back to the previous build to see if that works again, then we'll take it from there.

I'm not sure what update. I just know it was in July that this started happening and it was right after an update.

How can I check?

 

Open File Explorer. Click on your C: drive. Do you see a Windows.old folder there?

Also, Open Settings > System > About > Which OS Build number is there?

I ended up resetting my entire computer and the problem is still here. I did figure out it only happens when I go into extend mode with the second monitor. ie. I can have the monitor plugged in in duplicate mode and it works fine. Windows explorer only freezes up the start menu when I switch to extend,

 

And what HP laptop model number is it?
