Windows 10: error 0xc0000428 winload.exe cannot be verified

winload.exe digital signature cannot be verified error code:0xc0000428
I want to dual boot windows 7 and windows 10.

I have windows 7 installed on my C drive. (disk manage image attached)

Win 10 (D drive) where I want to install windows 10.

IN installation process:
"Getting files ready for installation" completes about 25% and then it reboots and shows the error.

In boot option I have
1) Windows setup
2) Windows 7

When I click on option 1(setup), it shows the error and setup cannot from that point progress.

I have no problem booting and running windows 7(option 2).

Windows 10 winload.exe status 0xc0000428 after firmware update motherboard

Because my son experienced screen freezes in his games, I recently updated the firmware of my motherboard.

Subsequent boots result in following message

File : \Windows\system32\winload.exe

Status: 0xc0000428

Info: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file

System refuses to boot from windows 10 and USB (both created from originally downloaded win 10 ISO

 

using windows 10 but pc trying to boot into windows7

My PC stopped and when it restarted I receive a message to select an operating system to use and Windows 7 is the only choice. I then go to a screen that gives me the following

File: \windows\system32\winload.exe

status: 0xc0000428

Info: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file

I cannot use any of the other advice I have been given as I cannot get into the PC as Windows 10 was installed automatically and worked well.

Any advice please

Opps, there is no Disk Mgmnt screen shot attached and .. the screen shot you did attach does not show an error, only the install percent complete. These things happen.

Since you're just beginning, it might be more expedient to start over.

I would delete the D: partition, leaving it raw/unallocated, and let Windows manage it during the install.
Be careful - only the D partition.

The tutorial should guide you all the way through. Read it and ask questions before you begin - it's easier to answer a question than to fix something or start over *Wink

I have attached disk partition image. Also deleted D drive and left it unallocated.

Ok, so your D: partition is now available to install Win10 - I'll wait for your next post to see if you have any questions about the Dual boot tutorial. It is well written and if you follow it, you should be up and running in very little time.

If there is anything in the tutorial that needs clarification or amplification, please don't hesitate to ask. Language sometimes gets in the way of understanding *Wink

When win10 first came out months back I was actually able to install it in dual boot with win7.

The error message is odd - you're installing using the media it seems to be asking for.

Try downloading the current Win10 ISO and either burn it to a DVD using bootable flash drive using Rufus.

Even if try to install win7 in place of win10, I get the same error. So I dont think there is problem with iso.

This screen shot was not of my laptop. (it shows similar error so that I attached)

actual description of my will be like this,

Good find, I think you're on the right track.

Paraphrasing SIW's post:
Use bcdboot, it is on the Win7 install DVD
Boot up the Win7 install DVD
Select Command prompt

enter the following commands (*** are comments, not part of the command):

diskpart
lis vol *** identify the drive letters for the Win7 Boot partition and the active System partition
*** ----> the letters are probably be different in Diskpart
exit

bcdboot <driveLetter-Win7 Boot>: /s <driveLetter-active System>:

Let's say that Diskpart tells you
J: is your Win7 Boot drive letter
H: is you active System drive letter
These drive letters (J and H) are only for examples - your letters will be different.
The command to use would be:

bcdboot J: /s H:
There might be another set of commands to run if this doesn't resolve the issue, but start with this.

 

Looks like a RAM issue to me. I would try running "Memtest86+" and make sure the RAM sticks are fine.

In the mean time, try this:
Settings > Update & ... > Recovery > Advanced Startup

Select trouble shoot from the options presented
then select advanced options
and finally, select Startup Repair




Depending on what needs to be repaired, Windows might stage the repairs.
If the first attempt does not resolve the issue, run the same procedure again
If the second attempt does not resolve the issue, run the same procedure a third and final time

Let me think about the issue a bit more ... if the above does not help, I'm running out of ideas.

I just experienced error Status 0xc0000428, "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file", when booting a cloned Windows 10 partition on a computer that is setup to dual boot that system and an older Windows 7 system (where the older Windows 7 system boots without error). The c0000428 error is generated by the Active partition's bootmgr file when it does not recognize the digital signature of the winload.exe file in the newer Windows 10 system.

To correct the problem, replace the bootmgr file in the Active partition with a newer one. In my case that would be replacing it with a Windows 10 one, which I was able to copy from the Windows 10 partition to the Active partition. In an Administrator or repair Command Prompt, I was able to use the "xcopy e:\bootmgr c:\ /h" command to copy the hidden bootmgr file where e: was the Windows 10 partition and c: is the Active boot partition.
