    Error 0xc1900101 while updating W10 20H2 from W10 1909 build 18363

    Since october 2020 I cant update W10 anymore due to Error 0xc1900101. During the last 2 out of 4 installation attempts I see 2 consecutive errors during the prepearation phase in Event Viewer: Event 7000, Service Control Manager stating: "The WsDrvInst service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified" Details:

    Log Name: System

    Source: Service Control Manager

    Date: 16-1-2021 21:53:41

    Event ID: 7000

    Task Category: None

    Computer: ADMLT1

    Description:

    The WsDrvInst service failed to start due to the following error:

    The system cannot find the file specified.

    </EventData>

    </Event>

    The other, immediately preceding above error with EventID 7000 states: "The ElevationService service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified".

    Has anyone get a clue which driver or file could be involved? Unfortuneately its not in the system log and I don't know where to look elsewhere. The system is running fine on 1909, critical updates are installed without problems and no HW was replaced or added last year.

    Configuration: Asus Laptop X71Q 1.0, Intel Pentium 64bit Dual CPU T3200 2 Ghz, 4GB RAM and 500GB Ricoh SD/MMC disk; Bitdefender AntiVirus, according to Belarc

  2. Windows 10 Full Update 1909, 18363.657 Build 18363

    Received notice, on my computer, that I needed to take the free update to windows 10 before my current version expired.

    I updated, the whole OS on 02/23/2020. Specs:= 1909, 18363.657, Build 18363. I now CANNOT change my default browser identification. Microsoft Edge is set as default, surprise, and I can't seem to change it to anything else, e.g. Firefox

    Suggestions???

    Cumulative update KB4598242-OS Build mismatches-W10 20H2

    ASUS Vivobook running Win 10 20H2 Home - OS Build 19042.685 (per winver)

    WU offers, downloads and then installs KB4598242, and then fails with a "files missing or similar (my recall)-will try again" plus error code 0x8007000D.

    I tried letting WU rerun it, same problem, and also cleared SoftwareDistribution and catroot2 folders, then rerunning. Same problems, same error.

    The KB4598242 is listed on MS as being for W10 20H2, and for OS builds 19041.746 and 19042.746 - which aren't my build of 19042.685. I guess this may be why it doesn't install!

    Any suggestions as to how I deal with this, including blocking this from WU?

    Edit
    I have removed SoftwareDistribution folder etc. which has of course removed the failed update from Update History. However, looking at Updates via Control Panel, I see an update KB4599841 Security Update, same date as first failed install of the other KB..242 (18/1), but this Security Update doesn't appear in Update History, though the MSRT on same date does, under Other Update.
