Windows 10: Error 41 - Need some input

Yesterday, I noticed my Lenovo Y40-70 was completely shutting off every 10ish minutes or so. This happened whether the computer was plugged into the wall or on battery power.This morning, I tracked down the logs in Event Viewer, and found the shutdowns filed as Error 41. However, there was no Bugcheckcode or Powerbuttontimestamp, which leads me to believe that it's a hardware problem. Next, I tried starting the memory diagnostic tool included with Windows 10. However, after I passed UAC, the computer immediately shut off. The computer didn't boot into the tool. I downloaded Memtest86 after that, and started testing my ram. Around the 7th test or so, Memtest shut down as well. I tried blowing out the laptop next, thinking the computer was overheating, but that didn't help either. The computer powered off at around 55C while in Windows, and idled at 40ish.


I've got no idea what to do next. Have I overlooked something? Any input would be appreciated.

Hello,

The kernel power event ID 41 error occurs when the computer is shut down, or it restarts unexpectedly. Having said that, we highly suggest performing the troubleshooting steps in this article:

Windows Kernel event ID 41 error "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first" in Windows.

I have the same problem, followed the tips from

but I still see the same error

I've tried syncing both with cable and Bluetooth -- same error :smileymad:

Hi,
I would try the following:
restart -> Safe mode -> Device manager -> Display adapters -> select gfx card -> right click -> properties -> driver tab -> click uninstall button -> remove the driver fully (check the drive + software removal box) -> reboot -> install newest driver.
Should fix your issue.

i had a similar issue with my Lenovo laptop

 

The GPU has doubtful anything to do with this, because it isn't used with a test like MemTest86(+).

How old is the laptop?
Has any hardware been replaced?
Check Lenovo for BIOS and chipset driver updates.

 

I only stayed the above as I had a very similar issue with my laptop and it turned out to be a bad driver.

 

I reinstalled both the AMD and Intel drivers. Was on it this morning and it worked for around 2 hours before it quit again. It's only 2 or 3 years old. I replaced the screen because it came with a crappy TFT display. Nothing else has been changed. It quit working after I had been on a 10 hour road trip. It was probably - 20C outside. Not sure if that would have anything to do with it.

 

The temperature of the surrounding could affect the temperature of the parts in the laptop, but the temperatures of the parts need to be quite high to let the system shutdown, if this is defined in the BIOS.
Quite high temperatures are temperatures like 85C, but laptops are usually build to resist high temperatures.

 

Oh ok. The hottest I ever saw it go to was 65C, and that was before I blew it out. I would doubt that it's a thermal issue.

 

give it a good clean, take the back off, maybe replace the thermal compound.

 

Both are not easy with a laptop, especially replacing the thermal paste.

 

I did remove the back and blow it out yesterday. It ran 10c cooler on memtest, but I'm not positive what my idle was in Windows. I don't have any thermal paste on hand, would that seriously affect the CPU?

 

I think I figured out the problem. It did appear to be graphics card related. I disabled the M275X in the BIOS and it hasn't crashed since. I would imagine that it was shutting down the computer in order to avoid overheating. Thank you guys for helping me get on the right track.
