Windows 10: error code 0x80080005 running MediaCreationTool2004 when doing an update from W10 1909 to 2004

I searched this forum for 0x80080005 problem and could not find answer to my situation. I would appreciate any guidance.


Background: After seeing my wife's Lenovo degenerate over the past few months, with one issue after another, my research led to https://www.microsoft.com/ that suggests to do a May 2020 Update. For whatever it is worth, I should mention that I tried the route of doing DISM and sfc that both returned successful completion. However the DISM and sfc has no noticeable improvement to W10 performance as noted by my wife. Personally, I use Chromebook and is my wife's tech support:-


I followed the direction therein including downloading the MediaCreationTool2004. I ran the tool. After the tool did its check out for 20 minutes, this message showed up "We're not sure what happened, but we're unable to run this tool on your pc. If you continue experiencing problems, reference the error code when contacting customer support. Error code 0x80080005 - 0x90018 "


Situation now: After the virtual agent of customer support suggested three methods, I tried Method 1 that suggested using Windows +X to select Control panel. That stopped me cold as Control panel did not show up. Method 2 suggested Restart background Intelligent Transfer Services using Windows + R. There was no response doing that.


Before going to Method 3 requiring booting up in safe mode, I would like to find out if any experts in this community would provide guidance before I find myself digging a deeper hole and make the situation worse.

I cannot send nor receive emails and get the error code 0x80080005. Any suggestions?

It guides you through stages of preparation, then you perform the repairs in Safe Mode.

Of course, you can just go to Safe Mode, launch the program, and directly run the repairs, missing the preparation... not the best of ideas. It's designed to give you ways of going back if something goes wrong by creating a restore point, registry backup... then doing the repairs.

Sorry? Have you got the correct Tweaking .com's repair tool? Or followed the steps to the end where you actually do the numbered repairs?




- If you had followed all the steps I'd have expected it to take a bit longer.
