    Error code 0x80780166 when attempting Windows Backup/Restore


    Hi,

    When attempting to back up to external hard drive, receive the following error code:

    0x80780166 and message STATUS_WAIT_2

    System is running Windows 10 Pro and the external drive should have enough space. Computer has 4GB RAM, 64bit, 3.10ghz processor

    Ideas?

    windows 10 backup failed - error code 0x80780166

    I have never had a successful backup with windows 10. The error code I get is 0x80780166. Can someone help me?

    Getting error 0x80780166 backing up windows 10

    Hello, I made sure my VSS is set to automatic and is running correctly. I have tried repeatedly to create a windows backup on my 1TB USP external hard drive and EVERY time I get the same error that the backup cannot find specified file. The backup does not
    complete as a result of this error (0x80780166). I am trying to run the backup with the Backup tool (Windows 7). Any ideas on what else I can try to get the backup to work? Thank you.

    As you are facing error 0x80780166 while backing up on Windows 10, do let us know the following to assist you better:

    • What is the complete error message along with the error code of this issue?
    • Are you any external drive for taking the backup?
    • How exactly are you trying to create a backup on Windows 10?

    As a work around, I suggest you to check if the Volume Shadow Copy service
    (VSS) is running properly.

    Steps:

    • Press Windows + R to open Run
      command, type Services.msc and press
      Enter.
    • Search for Volume Shadow Copy
      Service, right click on it and
      start the service.
    • Also, set the Startup type to Automatic.
    • Log-out from the current user account, restart, re-log-in and check if the issue persists.

    Also, I suggest you to refer to Microsoft article about:
    Back up and restore your files
    and check if it helps.
