    error downloading/installing updates KB4586876 and KB4592438

    Hello,

For several weeks my Dell Aurora R8 running windows 10 version 2004 build 19041.572 has been telling me it has these updates and when I click to install them, each of them appears to download and then begins installing. The Feature Update 20H2 also fails to install if I client on 'Download and install'. I think I’m really having issues with Windows Update as opposed to the particular updates that are failing, but I’m also willing to believe that it could be the updates in particular.

Partway through the KB4586876, I get the error in the screen shot below:

Shortly thereafter, the first update in the list also fails to install and I get the following overall message:

I have searched for errors installing these updates specifically and also the final error mentioned 0x800700c1 and found a variety of posts on this community forum that mention using various solutions which have not worked. As an additional comprehensive post, I tried the steps from this post mentioned in one of the posts on this forum and will give results for each sub-section of the post. The link to the steps are here:

How to reset the Windows Update components on Windows 10 • Pureinfotech

1How to reset Windows Update using Troubleshooter tool
Tried using the troubleshooting tool for both Windows Update and the Network Diagnostics and no problems reported back by Troubleshooter

    Still getting same error.

2How to fix Windows Update installing latest update manually
Tried installing these updates manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog website, but both of them reported back as not installed at the end of the install process.

3 How to fix Windows Update installing latest Servicing Stack Update SSU

Tried installing the latest SSU package from the Microsoft Update Catalog which for my build is SSU package 4593175. It failed to install like the manual update installs in item 2.

4How to fix Windows Update repairing corrupted system files
On this one I ran the dism.exe command first to /scanhealth and was told that the image was 'repairable'. Then I ran the second comment to repair it dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and was given the following error about the source not being found:

I tired to search for this error and the link provided LinkId=243077, but couldn't understand where to find the replacement 'good' file that I could use to repair the one that is missing. So this step was not able to be completed. Not sure if this is the cause of the issue, but would appreciate any feedback on this one in case the community feels like it needs to be fixed to deal with my issue.

I also tried to run the sfc /scannow command, but get a response back that "Window Resource Protection could not start the repair service". Again, not sure if that is because the DISM /restorehealth command failed to find a source?

5Use Windows Media Creation tool to update windows overall to latest version
This step is not in the article I posted, but was in others I searched for and it has served me well in previous issues on other computers where Windows Update would not complete the installation of updates. The Windows Media Creation tool 20H2 goes through the whole cycle of downloading updates and installing them using the keep apps and files option and at the end when you think it is going to tell you to restart, I get a pop up that says the installation failed, and nothing happens. The Windows Updates still fail as before.

6How to reset Windows Update using Command Prompt

I tried the commands provided of:
    net stop bits
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop appidsvc
    net stop cryptsvc

    bits was stopped successfully

windows update service COULD NOT be stopped initially but did on the second try.

Application identity service reported back as ‘not started’. Not sure if that needed to be started for things to function normally?

The cryptographic service turned off after I disabled my Acronis disk image active protection temporarily

The qmgr*.dat files deleted after the second attempt entering the command.

The windows cache deletion commands completed successfully.

The BITS and Windows Update security descriptors reset commands completed successfully.

All Dll registry commands completed successfully

The network and proxy reset commands completed successfully.

Restarted the services BITS, Windows Update, App ID, and Crypt.

    Restarted the computer.

Attempted the Windows Update and got the same error. I will try the Windows Creation Tool Update one more time, but expect the same error.

Also for added fun, after the restart and all these troubleshooting, my windows office programs immediately say they need to update and then tell me the program cannot open. I had to do a full repair of Microsoft Office and now it opens again but have to re-activate it which is annoying.

Can anyone please help me with my Windows Update problems? I'm hoping to not have to completely restore windows to scratch, but could also try to restore the computer to an earlier backup from my Acronis backups. Maybe it would have to be back to sometime in November before this update came out?

Any help would be appreciated at this point. Thanks!

    :)
