Windows 10: Error updating Windows to Creators Update

Hi! I've already received the notification to update my Windows 10 x64 Home twice. At the end of the process, after several automatic reboots, at the very end there is the "Restoring previous Windows version" message. I've tried all the other methods (Media Creation Tool, Update Manager, ISO from hard disk and from DVD). The result was only the same.

This was a couple of months ago. From then, I gave up and never received the prompt to update from WU again, apart from regular WU for my W10 version which is AU v1607, Anniversary Update.

My question is: could it be that it is necessary to leave some space unallocated in system C: drive? I had a 900MB of unallocated space, and just to not waste space I created a new partition for my office files. At the time of the updates there was no unallocated space available. Could it be this the cause?

Had this error.

Updated Win10 to Anniversary update, it did not fix this error.

Updated Win10 Anniversary Update to Creators Update, it did not fix this error.

Updated Win10 Creators Update to Fall Creators Update, THIS FIXED THIS ERROR!

Hopefully the Fall Creators Update will help everyone else with this error as well!

Trying a lot ..Reset windows and Fresh install of creator update.. but not connect to internet.

 

Please post a screenshot of your partitions- e.g. Minitool Partition Wizard - a 3rd party program is preferable if you have one.

Failing that, Disk Management (it won't show one partition if yours uses EFI).

Please make sure all text is visible in each column.

You will need sufficient free space on C:, also best to have at least 500Mb unallocated on your system disk.
Make sure all unneeded peripherals are disconnected; disable or uninstall any 3rd party AV.

There are plenty of threads about failed upgrades here- please feel free to browse.

Also get ready to do a manual upgrade- download the iso and create a bootable Win 10 medium. Guides in the Tutorial section if needed.

Check your disk- use Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and post a screenshot of its GUI.

 

What antivirus/antimalware programs are you running? Have you tried the upgrade with them disabled, or even uninstalled?

Unfortunately, sometimes the Windows installation just breaks and will refuse to upgrade. A clean install fixes it and usually will go for at least two or three major upgrades after that.

It is necessary to have free space available in the Windows partition - 20 GB should always be sufficient. But it is not necessary to have unallocated space on the drive. Very few computers have unallocated space on their hard drives/SSDs.

 

Why? I have never seen a retail manufacturer sell a computer with unallocated space on the system disk.

So, to respond to the other questions, my security software installed are:

Avast Antivirus Free (only File, Web and Mail Shield activated, all other crap deactivated)
Comodo Firewall (only firewall module activated - Auto-Containment, HIPS, VirusScope, Web Filter all disabled)
Malwarebytes' Antimalware Free without real time protection - so it should not interfere with the update process.

I hadn't tried to disable my antivirus before, I'll try next time. Of course I disconnected all my usb devices.

The "Other" partition of 128 mb should be the second partition just after the EFI System Partition, but I don't think that is the problem. I would start by uninstalling all antivirus programs except for Windows defender.

Comodo Firewall is known to cause trouble whilst trying to update to CU.
