Error: You will need to provide administrator permissions to change these attributes

I installed a new larger SSD for Windows 10 and my applications. a few months ago. My data I've always kept on a separate large HD. At install I was not able to access anything on my HD and had to add myself back as administratior for that drive, in the security tab. Everything then worked fine. I just realized that I had not reinstalled iTunes. after installing it, iTunes won't let me access the iTunes folder regardless of what I do. I always get "You will need to provide administrator permissions to change these attributes" iTunes won't open -- gives me an error that I don't have administrative access to the .itl file, so something similar. What gives? Its my computer, I am the administrator and no one else uses this computer. Evert hing else is working fine. I can't even delete or move the iTunes folder.

    :)

Error of asking permission from the administrator

    Hello,

The error message that asks permission usually appears when you don't have administrator rights to copy a file or folder. To determine the cause of the issue, we'd like to ask a few questions:

    • What is the exact error message that you're getting?
    • Were you able to copy files before without any error?
    • Were there any changes made on your PC prior to this?

Meanwhile, we suggest that you follow the steps provided by Niranjan Manjhi on this
post. It includes guidelines on how to take ownership of a file or folder,
turn off the User Account Control (UAC) which is necessary in preventing unauthorized changes to your computer, and enabling the hidden built-in administrator account on your PC. This was marked as an answer and a lot of Community members
claimed it as helpful and that it solved their problem.

Please update us with the results. We will be glad to assist you.

    Change administrator permission

    Hi,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you faced. I will certainly help you with this.

This issue may arise due to removing/uninstalling Windows 7 by using third party software (not recommended). I suggest you to follow the below given methods and check if issue persist.

    Method 1:

Run System Maintenance troubleshooter on the computer and check if any issue found. To do so, kindly follow the below given steps:

    • Press Windows and X key together and select
      Control Panel.
    • Click on Troubleshooting.
    • Click on View all option on the left side of the Windows.
    • Click on System Maintenance option.
    • Click on Next and follow the onscreen instructions to troubleshoot the issue.

    Method 2:

I suggest you to perform the below given steps and check if it resolve the permission issue.

    • Right click on the file and click on Properties.
    • Click on Security, check Owner should be "SYSTEM" in
      Advance tab.
    • Now check the save for C:\Users\<username>
    • Owner should also be "SYSTEM"
    • Check the users you signed into windows as (should be your Microsoft account) should be in the "Permissions entries" list with "Full Contol"
    • If not, Add the user you are logged in as.
    • All the folders and sub-folders below should be "owned" by the user you are logged into windows with
importantly, have a permissions entry for "full control"
    • Check for all the related folder where you are getting same error, but for some reason that same user is missing a "Permission Entry". Add a "full control" entry for the user and you should be able to save to that folder
      and all sub-folders

Hope this information helps. Post back with updated issue details for further help.

    Thank you.
