  1. ETL Files & Tracelogging

    Hello everyone,
I would like to ask about .ETL (Event Trace Log) Files.

Recently I noticed in the \System32\SleepStudy Folder that there is a file that keeps track of when my laptop screen is turned on - or woken. The ScreenOn Folder has a heap of ETL logs, each at around 128kb filesize.

Firstly I wanted to know if it's alright to delete these files without any adverse effects to windows?
And secondly, if there's a way to figure out how to prevent windows from creating these logs in the first place? It seems that over time it would eat up precious disk space just leaving them in there.
I suppose the opposite question to that is what is the Users benefit for keeping these logs?
    Thanks.

P.S. - It would be interesting to know what else windows keeps track of. So if there's a tool that allows me to see when and where windows creates any .ETL log, having access to that tool would be helpful.

    :)

    etl file

Hello Antonio, this is Event Trace Log file (ETL) that records applications and system warning, errors etc. This file is created by Microsoft Tracelog and is used to fix the issues. Deleting this file will not affect the system.

    ETL Files & Tracelogging

    Can I DELETE System.1.etl file ?!

    Hello Houssem,

ETL stands for Event Trace Log file which is created by Microsoft Tracelog. Windows records application and system-level warnings, errors, or other events to a binary file called the event trace log, which can then be used
to troubleshoot potential problems. You can delete the file and deleting it will not affect your system.

For more information, please refer to this article to know more information about Trace Log.
