Thanks a lot for the Cortana tip!
This issue was diving me crazy, it took around 7 secs for any excel file to open if I double click on it (without Ms. Excel being open) or if I open it from my Ms. Outlook. I disabled Cortana (from the Cortana settings), and restarted. Problem solved!

I have Windows 10 Pro (with the latest update), and I had the Excel file problem. I disabled Cortana and restarted to solve it. Now, regarding your external data issue, I tested it on my Excel 2010, and I could get the Microsoft Query Data Source selection without any crash.

I am from China. I find the perfect solution. ie, you don't have to disable Cortana.

    1. Change the (default) value of the following key:

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.12\shell\Open\command]
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\shell\Open\command]
    to:
    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\EXCEL.EXE" "%1"

    2. Remove or backup the command subkey
    3. Remove or backup the ddexec key

Thanks Vickylily for your input*Smile Certainly there is something wrong with these values. I've left the Cortana on but I've changed back the default file format from xlsm to xlsx and it works. So in my situation there is something wrong with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.SheetBinaryMacroEnabled I suppose...

That solved it for me. Except for Office 365 I used:

    Code: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\shell\Open\command] @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office 15\\root\\office15\\Excel.exe\" \"%1\""[/quote] Thanks Vickylily.*Wink

What's the issue? is this Windows related

Just one question guys*Smile Do you have 32or64 bit of Office?

  10. While this will work, I think it means that multiple spreadsheets are then opened in the SAME instance of Excel, rather than separate instances. Or is that not the case?

registry gets updated after restart and all changes are reverted... Is there any way to keep the edited files after restart? Would changing some permissions in regedit work? If so, which ones?

    Thanks.

    I have 64bit office btw.

Same issue here since moving from Windows 8.1 to 10, also with Office 365. The issue with Excel is tied to DDE -- which appears to be the common factor here between Excel and Cortana. With Cortana turned off, Excel can start up with the default command line switch -- including "/dde" which, I believe, has Excel open newly double-clicked files in a single instance of Excel (default behavior for the past few years). Changing the command line arguments and removing "/dde" will open files in separate instances I believe -- probably less efficient use of memory and resources in general, but with modern machines this likely isn't an issue.

I found Cortana amusing, but Google Now is still far more functional, so it's not an issue for me to put Cortana back on the shelf until Microsoft gets this DDE issue worked out. That way I can leave Excel in its stock configuration.

    Excel files open very slowly

While like most people here I first noticed this issue with Excel, that is not the only program I have found to be affected. Once I disabled the "Hey Cortana" feature, I found that a problem I was having with at least one other program that was slow or working incorrectly was immediately resolved. I was able to confirm this by disabling and re-enabling "Hey Cortana" multiple times and testing the program (a single use credit card number generator from Citibank) under each configuration.

My point is simply that it is very likely that more programs than we know are affected to one degree or another by this and solutions like that proposed by VickyLilly, while possibly useful to some, are more of a band-aid than a solution. Just out of curiosity, I'll be looking at a couple of other programs I had questions about later in the next day or so.

Fortunately for me, turning off the "Hey Cortana" feature is really a very minor loss.

Disable "Hey Cortana" feature is not enough for me. I need to disable Cortana at all.

  15. OMG THANK YOU! Registered just to say that. This bug has been driving me insane! I wonder if this will be fixed in Office 2016 that comes out next month... either way, thank you. I did have to completely disable Cortana in order for the bug to go away. That bit**!
