  1. Excel Memory Leak - Issues Continue

I've had issues with Excel (and Office 365 in general) for over a year. It often shows Not Responding when I have larger files open and appears to have an on-going memory leak. Reinstalls and updates never seemed to correct the problem. I ultimately moved to a new Dell last month hoping it was a Windows 10 issue. No luck. I'm still having the same issues.

My last experiment was to open Excel after a reboot and update and leave a blank spreadsheet open over the weekend. When I went home Friday, Excel memory was just below 500MB of usage and the CPU was around 2%.

This morning, Excel memory is 4441.0MB and CPU is 12.5% - All with one blank spreadsheet open.

    Windows 10 Pro Built 1809

    Intel i7-7700 CPU @ 2.60GHz

    16GB RAM

    Office 365 Version 1901 (Build 11231.20130 Click-to-Run)

The only active Add-ins are BI Generator and Microsoft Power Pivot for Excel. All others have been disabled based on previous attempts to address the issue.

OneDrive is running and I'm logged in to Office using my OneDrive credentials.

When Excel locks up, all of the office applications follow. Maybe that's normal.

I use Excel for database work, so I have ODBC links set up for database work as well as connections to Access 64-bit from Excel.

Any suggestions on what else I can try?

    :)

    Memory leak issue

The term "memory leak" means that an application fails to return all its RAM to the operating system when it exits. The leftover RAM is unusable to the operating system.

Step one is to identify the application that is leaking memory. Step two is to contact the application's developers and provide as much detailed data on the memory leak as you can. For example: which processes are still in RAM after the application exits
and how much RAM they occupy. Application developers never want their applications to leak memory and they will be grateful for the details you provide, particularly if they can replicate the leak on their own computers.

Possible Memory Leaks in Windows 10

A memory leak occurs when an application closes and fails to release all its RAM back to the operating system.

The first step in dealing with a memory leak is to determine which application is leaking memory.

The next step is to contact that application's technical support with complete details of the memory leak, since the developers will want to fix the problem ASAP.

    Window 10 memory leak

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm afraid it is more complex than looking for the process in task manager. It must be a driver using up the memory, not a specific program. I've done the Troubleshooting step already and it does nothing.

Using Poolmon, it shows that the Tag 'Pp' is continually increasing. This does not show up as memory being used in any particular task. If I could find what driver is using the tag 'Pp', I could at least try finding an update for that driver, but when I
use Findstr to look for that tag as Microsoft recommends, I get a large number of false positives, so I still really don't know what driver is causing the issue.

(The link to Andre Da costa had nothing to do with this type of memory leak.)

How do I narrow this down? Again, it is a pretty serious memory leak. After 12 hours the computer is useless until I reboot.
