Windows 10: Expert: Windows X Pro Image Corruption: Even after reinstall from ISO

Desperate assistance needed please: I have upgraded directly from a Windows Ten Pro ISO downloaded directly from Microsoft, but both sfc /scannow and Dism "restore heallth" run from an elevated prompt report that they cannot repair the image errors. Windows help desk simply says to "reset" from Update and Security from the Settings menu, but this machine was running CLEAN Windows 8.1 (sfc /scannow or DISM commmands reported no errors) and resetting as they suggest will (at a minimum) mean that all of my installed software will be entirely lost.

I am desperate for a person proficient in restoring the integrity of a Windows Ten Pro image (have tried BOTH reinstalling directly from the downloaded ISO (multiple times and from re-downloaded ISO's and doing in-place upgrades). Both methods report the same errors upon reinstallation or in-place upgrade methods.

The running image is corrupt, corrupt, corrupt. Please...please tell me the command(s) to restore it to health, as was the case with the previous clean 8.1 that was running before the upgrade???

Both Sfc /scannow and DISM restorehealth report that the image is repairable, but it is beyond my understanding how to do do. Please...please help??

Windows Repair Not Working and Command Prompt reveals my HD is write protected

tried running iso from usb and dvd and even copied iso onto hard drive but the option to reinstall windows using a specific iso image is not finding the file.

Original Titleroblems after I upgraded my PC from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro

After I upgraded my PC from 7 Pro to 10 Pro, many problems happened.

I tried to reinstall it, for a few times, even after make a 'Windows 10 Pro' CD, and no progress on it.

The system 'Restore' works to create a point but after I restart my computer all the 'Restores' points are gone.

I cannot use the 'Check Disk' (ChkDsk) --it starts and, at the first step, it stops to work and turns off my PC.

When I try to use the 'Command' (Cmd) to fix my computer, for example:

- ChkDsk

- sfc /scannow

- F8, option: 'Repair the system or computer' (?)

- Dism /Image:C:\offline /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:c:\test\mount\windows

- Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:c:\test\mount\windows /LimitAccess

- among other commands, I receive the same result: 'some files are corrupt but could not be repaired'; or, 'the 'system image' source could not be found.

Even after I worked at the 'Save Mode'.

What should I try next time to fix my computer system?

Please, help me!

 

Have you checked the CBS.log to see which files are corrupt? There is a known problem that if you have an NVidia graphics card the driver causes a file called opencl.dll to change and it no longer matches the W10 version. This causes sfc to signal it as a corrupt file. If this is your only error I would not be concerned.

While you could change it back to the W10 version I do not feel that this is necessary and I believe W10 will address this inconsistency in a future update.

Of course if you have other errors then we can take this further, you will need to run the DISM tool.

The first suggestion to examine the CBS.log is unfortunately not something I am able to interpret for errors. The display adapter you mention appears to be Intel, rather than nVidia, I believe?

I have attached the latest cbs.log run a few minutes ago from an elevated command prompt for sfc /scannow if you will please review?

The second attachment is also from an elevated prompt using the command "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /restorehealth" The other DISM commands I have seen asked to be run, "scanhealth" and "checkhealth" both report that the image is repairable, but "restorehealth" fails. I also ask for review/repair help here as well please?

I should have mentioned initially that also...NONE of the store or its "apps" (Skype, Edge, etc.) will open/function...and give only some kind of error that they cannot be opened with the "built-in Administrator Account". Perhaps that is comparable in some ways to the other errors mentioned?

Ok, now that we have ruled out a false signal from the nVidia adaptor it looks like you do need to try and repair the corrupt files. Please refer to the DISM tutorial I included in my previous post and run Option 1, step 6. As indicated you will need to download the ISO file which matches your system (you have the W10N PRO version, probably 64bit and English but it could be English international if you are not in the US). Mount the ISO file so that it gets a drive letter by which you can address it to identify the source location of the install.wim file for the DISM command.

This can take a while and then you can restart and try the sfc command again.

Take your time and check everything via the tutorials if you can, post back to let us know how you get on.

 

Okay so far:

I have again "re-downloaded the Windows 10 Pro 64 image directly from MS using the only allowed defaults provided with their "download tool" (the "N" in previous posts was a typo so does not apply), and stored it on my desktop.

I mounted it as drive F, according to the instructions on the DISM page you provided the link to.

*According to step 7, of option 1, I am prepared to use the "install.esd" file from the Sources folder of that image to attempt the restore, instead of step 6, because according to instructions on that same page, I should use that file instead of "install.wim", when my ISO contains that file (not install.wim).*

Last, I am prepared to execute the DISM command using drive F as the mounted drive for that image, however I apologize I do not understand how to execute the command properly given what is pasted below (I pasted that entire step 7 of option 1, not knowing what part may or may not be used.

Specifically, I do not understand exactly how to write the command for it to execute properly...do you see? I do not understand the full path line of the command, especially the part in red. It is beyond me...so I am hoping you will provide the exact "****" command to paste in the elevated prompt to accomplish the image "restorehealth"?

Please do not be "afraid" (given my explanation before that the store and any other app(s) do not function), to do "more" repair than may be necessary, if it will just put it the way its supposed to be, before I upgraded from a perfectly clean 8.1 image that was giving no problems at all beforehand. Perhaps to be safe, I can do just the command you suggest, and if any remaining errors remain after sfc /scannow, etc., I can post the new logs, and we might address those (if any) at that time?

7. To Use DISM /RestoreHealth /Source:esd Command

*Arrow Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:Full Path to install.esd file:1

OR

(To prevent DISM from using Windows Update for online images)
*Arrow Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:Full Path to install.esd file:1 /limitaccess

For example:

*Arrow Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Install.esd:1 /limitaccess

OR

(USB from Media Creation Tool where E is drive letter of USB)
*Arrow Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:E:\Sources\Install.esd:1 /limitaccess

This method requires you to have an iso downloaded from Tech Bench. You need techbench for the esd file

Once you have it downloaded from Tech Bench (just save it to your download folder) go to that download, right click on it > click Mount> leave it there.
Now go into my PC and see what the drive letter of the mount is...this is important
Now go back to your elevated command prompt (Admin), at the flashing prompt, copy/paste this command line......................
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:d:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess
Note :d is the drive where the iso is mounted. Change it if your driver letter is different.
When it is completed, you should get the report that the operation is successful.
Now run the sfc /scannow again. It should be ok this time and fix corrupted files.
You may have to run the sfc scan a few times for it to fix all files

 

You've already mounted the ISO in F: Drive. Double check under F:\sources:
If you have install.wim then use this syntax:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:WIM:F:\sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess

If you have install.esd then use this syntax:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:ESD:F:\sources\Install.esd:1 /LimitAccess

NOTE: Just copy and paste the command into the Admin command and run

 

Sorry @Bondbeau, I was unavailable for a while. @topgundcp has provided the exact command you need to use. It will be the second one as you have the .esd file.

 

Please confirm:

I have differing instructions....2 say the same and 1 says something else.

As a result

1. I am currently downloading the Tech Bench ISO version recommended by @AnEdge (the link provided was dead/404 by the way).

2. @philc43 and @topgundcp say I already have the correct ISO downloaded using the MS download tool, and to use the syntax for the "install.esd" command.

Apologies...but I do not have the knowledge to distinguish what to me are indecipherable details...so I just want to run the correct command and not take a chance on making things worse.

At present, I lean toward @philc43 et al, except that the original page they all reference, does say the source iso should be from "Tech Bench" (if there's a difference?)...so please...may I have clarification before trying anything?

It should not matter which version you have they both contain the same files but as you already have the .esd you can go with that one.

 

Let me clarify one more time. There are 2 different versions of Windows ISO that you can download.
One from Techbend website and the other is from Media Creation Tool website.
From Techbend, the ISO contains: install.wim
From Media Creation tool, the ISO contains: install.esd

install.wim & install.esd use 2 different methods of compression to package all neccessary files to install/repair Windows. install.esd is smaller in size and faster to download but once they are extracted, they both will have exactly the same files/folders structure.

In the old version od DISM command, it only works with install.wim. The latest version of DISM will work with either one. Since you've already have the ISO downloaded, it does not matter if it's from Techbend or from MCT. People are unaware of the new version of DISM and keep advising to download from Techbend.

As stated from previous post. Check the "Sources" folder, if you have an install.esd then use the 2nd command, if you have install.wim then use the 1st command. The result will be the same, you just have to tell the command what file type to work on.

 

Just to clarify DISM v10.0.10586 does support .ESD files...
