  1. Explorer.exe crash when right click->New

    Hi,
I have a windows 10 computer which crashes when I right click and open the "new" submenu.
    I already tried to :
    - disable all non microsoft shell extension with ShellExView
    - try in safe mode (same issue)
    - run sfc /scannow and dism repair

I found out that if I edit "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Discardable\PostSetup\ShellNew \Classes" to remove DOCX or rename DOCX to docx it fixes the issue. BUT, this change is overwriten each time I open this "new" right click menu, so it only works one time.
A solution could be to make this change permanent but I don't know how...

Here is a crash dump analysis from osronline :

Code: *** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for sppc.dll *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for sppc.dll *** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for DropboxExt64.18.0.dll *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for DropboxExt64.18.0.dll *** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for ashShA64.dll *** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for ashShA64.dll TRIAGER: Could not open triage file : e:\dump_analysis\program\triage\modclass.ini, error 2 GetUrlPageData2 (WinHttp) failed: 12029. *** The OS name list needs to be updated! Windows 10 Explorer.exe Crashes 10 Seconds After Startup

    >>To better understand the issue please let us know if you have made any changes to the PC recently.

Yes I changed my computer recently; I just did a clean install of WIndows 10. However, the problem occurred both before and after the clean install.

    >>Try to kill the Windows Explorer (explorer.exe process) from the task manager.

    >> a. Right click on Taskbar and choose Start Task Manager.

    >>b. Look for Explorer.exe under Processes tab, then right click on it and select End Process.

    >>c. Now, try to create a new explorer.exe from the task manager.

    >>d. Click on File and then click on New Task. Type Explorer.exe and click OK.

Killing explorer.exe in this way produces the same effect I described above. It causes my Touchpad driver, NVida driver, and Dell Audio driver to stop working.

    >>I also suggest you to do a clean boot and check if any third party apps are causing the issue.

I used the taskmanager to disable startup programs, and I narrowed down the problem. The "odrive" application, which is a cloud syncing utility is what causes explorer to crash. I tested it several times. Also, if I manually start odrive after bootup it
    also causes explorer to crash.

So I have two problems: odrive causes explorer.exe to crash. And besides that, explorer crashing causes my Touchpad, Display, and Audio drivers to stop working.

The first problem, I guess I should contact odrive about... The second, what could be the explanation for that?

  3. System Icons Greyed Out for Windows 10

    Easiest way is:

Right click on task bar > task manager > find 'windows explorer' in processes > right click and end task > file > new task > type explorer.exe > hit enter

    Explorer.exe crash when right click->New

Hi, you might like to try this freeware program to remove a possibly corrupt entry:

Explorer.exe crash when right click->New [IMG]

Naturally you could do the same in the registry- it's a convenient tool.
You can compare what it does with the registry to the action you quote.

  5. I removed docx with this software but it did not change the ShellNew \Classes value and the crash still happens

Are you sure it's the docx extension and not another?

Also you could check this doesn't happen if you create a new user for test purposes. If it does, there's an underlying problem with Windows.

And do you have a relevant system restore point?

  7. Well, the problem disappear if I manualy remove docx extension from the shellnew registry... until it is added again by windows.
I do not have a relevant restore point.
I will test a new user later.

  9. Please find below the report, I see no errors
I also tried a new user it works fine, but there is no .DOCX in registry. So the issue remains : how to remove it from my current account. Or what else can I do ? The new menu editor dalchina suggested does not change the ShellNew registry, but changes value elsewhere.
    Thanks.

That's progress- indicates the problem is definitely related to your user configuration, so it's effectively data, not Windows that needs fixing.

What put the docx entry there? You might try
    a. changing the association with docx
    (In Settings or Control panel)
    b. uninstalling the program that created the association

  11. I am not sure : does changing file association affects the "new" menu ?

Windows 'out of the box' knows nothing about docx....

  13. Explorer.exe crash when right click->New

I reinstalled office 2016, and changed docx file association, and it still crashes on "new"
But I really don't see the relation between file association (which program opens a type of file) and the list of file type in the new shell menu

Imagine a new Win 10 installation. It knows nothing about docx. To have the ability to either
    a. Open a file of type docx
    b. Create a new 'docx' file

    - something must have put those there.

If you have a file association created you may also have the ability to create a new file of that type.
    If you don't, you won't.

    Does that help?

  15. I agree, but the problem is not with the file association, it is with the new context menu containing docx.
Docx is associated with office 2016, that's why I removed it. It removed the file association but not the docx from "new" menu
