Extend Partition size on Lenovo S206 running Win 10 to create backup

    Hi all,

I'm trying to set up a laptop for my girlfriend. It's a Lenovo S206. The laptop has a nice little 'one touch' button that lets you automatically restore the laptop to any previous point with a clean re-install. Worked great as win 8 but now it's updated to Win 10 I want to create a new point while it's 'clean' as she's going overseas, just so she can sort it herself if it all goes wrong!

Only problem is, pressing one-touch button and asking it to create the backup, it says it needs 39.9gb of space, and only 25gb is available.

Looking at the Disk Management, currently the hard drive is as follows:

    || 1000MB healthy (recovery partition) || 260mb Healthy (EFI System Partition || 1000mb healthy (OEM Partition) || 250.31GB NTFS Healthy ( Windows8_OS (C*Smile Boot, Page File, Crash Dump) || 462MB Healthy (Recovery Partition) || 25GB NTFS Healthy (Primary Partition LENOVO (D*Smile ) || 20GB Healthy (Recovery Partition) ||

    Free spaces are 1000mb, 260mb, 1000mb, 202.92GB, 462mb, 23.83GB, 20GB

First thing - why so many little drives, with no used data?
Second thing - I assumed that D: (LENOVO) was the drive that the one-touch used - I seem to remember when I clean restored to factory (Win 8) the address was in D: - is that correct? it only seems to have a few mb on it
Thirdly - should I just be extending that drive to make it big enough, if so how? I tried shrinking C but you can't then extend D (it's not 'next' to it)

    Any help much appreciated!!!

    :)

  2. partitioning and creating a dynamic partition in order to install win 10?

Below is the snip of the Disk Management screen.

There is only Win 7 on c:/ drive and the several programs. Not much data except that contained in 2 OneDrives I have and so in the cloud also.

I have 1024 MG of unallocated disk space which I created to hopefully use to extend the Partition into.

I have an exterior hard rive also as you can see.

The notion for going Dynamic was the concept of extending partition size by allowing it to grow as required by new demands. I figured Win 10 was in need of greater than 100 Mg of partition which I am assuming is Drive B:/ as is displayed.

Let me know what you think...note: I can backup files but not create a System Image to any drive or because the Memory allocated to the Volume required is not enough. (I have had this issue constantly on Win 7.)

    Thanks loads...

  3. Windows 10 Update Continues to Fail/Windows Update Continues Install Attempts 0xC1900101-0x20017

I have tried to extend the size of the Recovery Partition using the Easeus Partition Master but it will not allow me to extend the size of that partition. It would appear because the partition is a reserved automation by Windows it will not allow it to
    increase the size.

Your recovery partitions are quite large, I wouldn't know how that happened but a normal one has a max size of 500MB.
With each upgrade a new recovery partition is added, this partition is used whenever you cannot boot into Windows succesfully after 3 tries. The EFI partition is basically required for the boot, with GPT format and no EFI partition the system will not boot.
I'm a bit worried about the 20GB recovery partition, was this partition present before upgrading?

I'm not sure what you mean with 'the address' exactly?

You can only extend a partition if the unallocated space is directly on the right side, so if you were trying to extend the C partition you would have to delete the recovery partition between partition C and D.

NOTE: Actually, there's an extra partition MSR (Microsoft reserved partition) which is not shown in Disk Management. Need to use diskpart to see it.

    @axe0
The Windows installed using GPT partition scheme. Normal is 450MB for GPT, 500MB for MBR.
However, this layout is customized by Lenovo and is not standard.

500 was just a guess *Smile
I have a recovery partition of 452MB so I wanted to say 475MB max but I know that would be odd.

Honest answer... I was stupid / stressed / rushing, didn't check prior to update all partitions, so I don't know if the 20gb was there or not!

Address - just meant which drive it was referring to as the location for the backup

The lack of ability to expand is now explained though, thank you - I've never tried doing it with disk management before (as I say... stupid / stressed / rushing!)

If you do a fresh install of Windows 10:
For GPT disk type, it is 450MB, called Recovery (contains Recovery tools only, boot code is in EFI System partition)
For MBR disk type, it is 500MB and called System Reserved (contains both boot code + Recovery tools)

I know, I'm familiair with GPT format *Smile Also with MBR but a bit less than with GPT.

I just find it a bit odd that with an in-place upgrade I did on my laptop it created a 452MB recovery partition, not a problem though but that is why I 'randomly' said 500MB recovery partition.

Since there's only one HD in your PC. You would need to buy an external HD to save the backup.

Of course you can free up some space and make a backup to it but what good does it do if your HD get defected then you won't be able to restore.

You are talking about in place upgrade, I am talking about fresh install. With in place upgrade, windows will shrink the C drive to ~450 GB, plus or minus couple of GB's to get the partition aligned correctly.
