Windows 10: External drive takes long time load thumbnails

So I have an external drive connected to my main Alienware Laptop via either usb, I do a lot of photo editing and processing but I've found the biggest time waster for me is whenever I browse through my thumbnail files on any of my external drives, they take such a long time load the thumbnails. I can hear my computer working to load each video file's thumbnail and I'm just sitting there watching them appear 1 by 1 with hundreds of files. Isn't there a way for the computer to cache these thumbnails and remember it each time I shutdown and load up the computer s

if you want an external drive to last a long time i suggest you get the coolest 5400rpm drives you can find.

 

Long Loading Time for Lock Screen

I've tried all of the steps that you've given me. Unfortunately, none of them made a difference except for the clean boot step. It didn't completely solve the problem, however I did notice a
slightly faster load time for the lock screen. However, it still takes an unusually long time to load it. Any other suggestions?

Windows explorer: Thumbnails take a long time to generate

Hello everyone.

I recently noticed that it would take Windows a long time to generate the thumbnails in Windows Explorer when there are sub-folders a couple of levels deep. If there are no sub-folders or sub-folders just one level deep, then the thumbnails would instantly load.

I can click on a folder and then wait for the green bar to slowly go across the screen, often time, it would take minutes. All thumbnails would eventually be shown, but that is an awfully long time. If I scroll down, the next set of thumbnails would then take a long time to load. If I scroll back up, it would take a long time to reload those thumbnails again. During the time of the loading, the CPU fan would rev to max and is very loud.

I've combed the web and this forum for answers. I've deleted the thumbnail cache. Another thread said to disable the Windows search service, but I use that a lot to locate files and pictures on my PC.

At first, I thought it was my new SSD failing already, because that usually happens when one of my hard drive fails. I get the same results copying the files and directory structures to a RAM drive. On folders with multiple directories deep, it would take a long time to load the thumbnails there too.

There was an update that requires a reboot two days ago and I believe it is what caused the issue. According to Windows, it is the latest update pending the feature update one.

Windows version 1909
OS Build: 18363.959
CPU: Zeon E3-1505 v5
Ram: 64GB

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I work with images and documents so rely on Windows Explorer. Until now, I did not have this issue.
