Windows 10: External hard drive won't let me explore files on one specific computer.

Hi there,


I have a 5TB external hard drive that stopped working with my Win 10 PC a few days ago.

The drive is visible, but if it's plugged in I can't select it, open device manager, scan it or look at it's properties without is crashing my system.


I've since tried it with 4 different machines, 2 win10, 1 mac and my old laptop Win7. It works perfectly on all of the 'new computers'. It seems any machine that I have never used it with can acces it and make it work fine, but the two that I have used it with in the past current pc and laptop crash everytime it try to access it or use any program that tries to acces it.


I've tried updating the drivers and unistalling it in the device manager, scanning it for faults, coruption/bad sectors with my work pc, but it keep being an issue on my laptop and current pc.


Does anyone have any ideas?

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

Yes, you may format the external hard drive. Follow the below steps.

• 
  Connect the external hard drive to Windows 10 computer.
  
• 
  Press Windows + E keys on the keyboard to the keyboard to open the file explorer.
  
• 
  Locate the external hard drive on left navigation pane in File explorer.
  
• 
  Right click on the external hard drive and click on
  Format.
  
• 
  Click Start and follow on screen instructions to format the hard drive.

Cannot find (Seagate) external hard drive in File Explorer.

Thank you, Billion, for all the help. Unfortunately, the drive still doesn't show up in File Explorer. The computer recognizes it, and reads that the external hard drive is working properly. However, I still can't access anything inside it.
