  1. External hard drives have always bitmap error in mft after switch hard drive from computer...

    Hello Tech-Angels,

I have two computers (A and B) running Windows 10.

I create a new txt-file with the text "I am computer A" on an external hard drive connecting (USB 2.0) with computer A.

    I shutdown computer A.

I take the external hard drive to computer B and connecting (USB 2.0) it.

I opened the txt-file and write "I am computer B" in a new line. And I saved the file.

Several hours later I shutdown computer B.

I take the external hard drive to computer A and connecting it.

The txt-file is disappeared (show hidden files is enabled).

I scann and repair the external hard drive.

The txt-file is now there. I open it and only the first line (I am computer A) is there.

Chkdsk said that there where bitmap errors in mft (see below).

I have changed the external hard drive (ssd) to another external hard drive (hdd). But the problem is still there.

I have changed the direction (A-B,B-A) and the problem is the same.

I always shutdown the computers before takting the external hard drive. And the lights of the external hard drive are off.

Well ... it seemed to be a problem with changed master-file-table. Hope anyone here can help me.

    Thank you

    Michael

    External hard drive not recognised

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.

    Hi,

Just to verify, did you mean, your back up files used to be on your external hard drive, but now it's no longer there? If this is true, kindly provide more answers to the questions below, so we can further assess the issue:

    • When did the files start to disappear?
    • What are the troubleshooting steps you have done so far?
    • Did you make nay changes on the settings of your PC or hard drive prior to this issue?
    • Are you getting any error messages when trying to plug in your external drive?
    • Does your external drive shows that the space is consumed?

Please advise. We'll keep an eye out to your response.
