Windows 10: External headset microphone doesn't work, but headphones do

I just bought a new Dell G5 5590 and I also have new Sony 1000X M3 headphones. The headphones work on my phone for both the microphone and the speakers. However, when I try to use them with my laptop, sound comes through the speakers, but it doesn't recognize the microphone. I've also tried different headphones, both Bluetooth and wired and it doesn't matter what external device I connect, the only microphone I can get to work is the internal one. I usually use my laptop connected to a docking station with the lid closed, so it's not ideal to have to use the internal microphone because it sounds muffled. I've searched forums and even called Dell and I can't seem to find a solution to this. Oddly, when I have the speech recognition properties open where you can set up your microphone for speech to text, etc. it works, but when I have the settings>system>sound page open on the part where it shows the test your microphone bar, nothing registers. I can't get it to work with Slack or Duolingo or any of the other apps I use. I could see it being a Chrome issue, but I tried it in Edge as well and I'm using the Slack app not the web browser version. It really seems to be a Windows issue or maybe a combination of Windows and Realtek, but I can't figure out how to correct the issue no matter what I try.

Microphone doesn`t work

My microphone and ear-phone doesn`t work. Please help me, I have windows 7 home basic, my computer reproduces a sound, but devices no.

 

Asus External microphone doesn't work

I have an ASUS G501JW (ROG laptop) OS Windows 10, and can't get the external microphone of a headset to work. Just the built in microphone works, and it doesn't seem to recognise any other microphones. It has a dual jack that combines the headphone speakers & microphone in one.

I tried both the methods mentioned, but my external microphone is still undetectable by Windows.

After connecting an external headset with microphone, headset works, but microphone doesn't. Neither the external speaker, nor the external microphone show up in the playback/recording devices list. After plugging in the integrated headset and microphone
through 4 pin 3.5 mm jack, sound comes to headphone, but system still uses the internal microphone.

My external microphone was working fine some days back, but I am not sure what happened that it suddenly stopped working and now is even undetectable.
