Windows 10: External USB hard drive not showing

Hello,


I got a laptop, which I bought only last month and I decided to plug my external hard drive in. Everything was going fine for a while, until a couple of day later when my laptop refused to recognise my USB drive.


I spent hours updating the BIOS, updating windows, installing the root USB from "device manager" etc.


Now, my external hard drive won't connect to my laptop or PC. I can feel the wheel spinning, but nothing is popping up and it's not in "device manager" either.


I recently bought a Samsung T7 SSD, but my PC keeps disconnecting every second the hard drive would blink as well.


The only way I could get the SSD working, is by using the Y cable to my laptop. But, my external hard drives won't work on it.

We suggest that you try the troubleshooting steps below:

• Open your External Hard Drive file in File Explorer.
• Type the name of the file you want to search on the search box and click Enter.

The file will show up in Search Results and you will be able to move it to the correct folder.

Thanks for this. I've done what you suggested and been through all the steps mentioned in the article. The hard drive works fine on a Mac computer, and I've managed to copy the information on it. It must be a Surface issue so I'll try to get a chat line tomorrow.

Method 1: Uninstall and then reconnect the external hard drive - this method resolve issues where the currently loaded USB driver has become unstable or corrupt.

• Select Start, type Device Manager in the Search box.
• Select Device Manager from the returned list.
• Select Disk Drives from the list of hardware.
• Press and hold (or right-click) the USB external hard drive with the issue, and select Uninstall.
• After the hard drive is uninstalled, unplug the USB cable.
• Wait for 1 minute and then reconnect the USB cable. The driver should automatically load.
• Check for the USB drive in Windows Explorer.
