Windows 10: External USB Storage drive not detected in WIn10

Good Day, I have 3 drives installed using Win10 and now want to connect external USB drive but drive is not detected in File Explorer, when I do plug External drive on Laptop it works fine What do I need to enable in Win to detect a 4 drive as C, D and E are all in Use

Thank you for replying.

• Have you allocated drive letter for the external drive?
• Do you get any prompt when you connect the external drive to your PC?
• Is the external device getting detected under disk manager?

You will be able to view the contents of drives if you have allocated a drive name/letter. If you do not allocate a name/letter and if you try to view it on the PC, it will not be visible.



Connect the external device to the PC and follow the steps below to check if the external drive is getting detected:

• Open Run command by pressing Windows Key + R, type
  diskmgmt.msc and press Enter.
• Check if the external device is detected in this window.
• If the device is detected as unallocated, right click on the external drive and select
  New Simple Volume option. Follow the onscreen instructions where-in, in one of the page you will be asked to select a drive letter.
• Assign a drive letter and check if you are able to access the contents of the drive.

External USB drives not being detected by Windows 10 after applying the Anniversary Update

Thanks Raymond.

I ran the Hardware and Device troubleshooter. It only asked me to restart the machine. I did, but the external storage drive was still not detected.

I reinstalled the controller of the USB mass storage device and rebooted. Still not detected.

My next step will be to use a 3rd party software to back up the disk's content and reformat the disk. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

you're in luck, the guy with way too much external storage is here to the rescue!


step 1: try with a different USB cable

step 2: take the drive out of the enclosure and connect it internally to your PC

quite likely the cable or enclosure has died. if you're re-initialising the disk you might actually be erasing it... so dont do that.
