It seems it's quite hard to keep private data actually private, even for the almighty Facebook. A database with telephone numbers of possibly hundreds of millions of Facebook users was spotted online, totally unprotected. It is unknown who uploaded the database and why.

The database contained 419 million entries, according to Facebook, half of them are duplicates, meaning that it would be the data of several hundred million users. The database showed unique IDs of Facebook users, linked to their telephone numbers and in some cases also with name, gender and country. Facebook IDs are unique and can be traced back to accounts. According to a report from TechCrunch, the dataset had included 133 million records from U.S.-based Facebook users, 18 million from the U.K., and over 50 million from Vietnam...

Facebook unintentionally uploaded 1.5 million users email contacts

Facebook harvested the email contacts of 1.5 million users without their knowledge or consent when they opened their accounts.

Since May 2016, the social-networking company has collected the contact lists of 1.5 million users new to the social network, Business Insider can reveal. The Silicon Valley company said the contact data was "unintentionally uploaded to Facebook," and it is now deleting them.

The revelation comes after pseudononymous security researcher e-sushi noticed that Facebook was asking some users to enter their email passwords when they signed up for new accounts to verify their identities, a move widely condemned by security experts. Business Insider then discovered that if you entered your email password, a message popped up saying it was "importing" your contacts without asking for permission first.

At the time, it wasn't clear what was happening — but on Wednesday, Facebook disclosed to Business Insider that 1.5 million people's contacts were collected this way and fed into Facebook's systems, where they were used to improve Facebook's ad targeting, build Facebook's web of social connections, and recommend friends to add.

A Facebook spokesperson said before May 2016, it offered an option to verify a user's account using their email password and voluntarily upload their contacts at the same time. However, they said, the company changed the feature, and the text informing users that their contacts would be uploaded was deleted — but the underlying functionality was not.

Facebook didn't access the content of users' emails, the spokesperson added. But users' contacts can still be highly sensitive data — revealing who people are communicating with and connect to.

While 1.5 million people's contact books were directly harvested by Facebook, the total number of people whose contact information was improperly obtained by Facebook may well be in the dozens or even hundreds of millions, as people sometimes have hundreds of contacts stored on their email accounts. This may be jumping the gun a bit *Big Grin , as you are still working to establish a solid format for the database, but here goes a suggestion to list in the DB:

Facebook banned Twinmark Media Enterprises in the Philippines

Today we banned a digital marketing group in the Philippines — Twinmark Media Enterprises and all its subsidiaries — from Facebook. This organization has repeatedly violated our misrepresentation and spam policies — including through coordinated inauthentic behavior, the use of fake accounts, leading people to ad farms, and selling access to Facebook Pages to artificially increase distribution and generate profit. We do not want our services to be used for this type of behavior, nor do we want the group to be able to reestablish a presence on Facebook.

Here’s a breakdown of what we’ve removed as part of this ban:

Presence on Facebook and Instagram: 220 Facebook Pages; 73 Facebook accounts; 29 Instagram accounts

Followers: About 43 million accounts followed at least one of these Facebook Pages

Facebook Pages with highest number of followers:

Filipino Channel Online: 10.4 million

Gorgeous Me: 5.7 million

Unhappy: 4.9 million

Text Message: 4.4 million

TNP Media: 4.3 million

Again, our decision to remove this organization, and the Pages and accounts it controls, is based on the behavior of these actors who repeatedly violated our misrepresentation and spam policies, rather than on the type of content they were posting.

This specific investigation began after we learned that Twinmark was selling admin rights to Facebook Pages it had created, in order to increase distribution and generate profit, which violates our spam policy. This prompted our teams to take a deeper look at a broader group of Pages and accounts associated with these users, ultimately uncovering a large network of Pages and accounts that were engaging in coordinated inauthentic behavior, the use of fake accounts, leading people to ad farms and selling access to Facebook Pages.

We are continuously working to uncover this kind of abuse, and we know that the people behind it — whether economically or politically motivated — will continue to evolve their tactics. Today’s announcement is just one of the many steps we have taken to prevent bad actors from abusing our platform. We will continue to invest heavily in safety and security in order to ensure that people can continue to trust the connections they make on Facebook.
