Windows 10: Facebook introduces Vanish Mode for Messenger and Instagram

Sometimes a message is just spontaneous â something you want to say in the moment without worrying about it sticking around. Thatâs why weâre excited to introduce vanish mode on Messenger, which lets you send messages that disappear automatically. How it works is simpleâmessages disappear after theyâre seen and you leave the chat. Video Player

To turn it on, swipe up on your mobile device in an existing chat thread and youâre in vanish mode. Swipe up again and youâre back to your regular chat. Thatâs it!

Now you can send memes, GIFs, stickers or reactions to share what you really think when you canât find the words, or just be silly with your friends without it staying in your chat history.

Safety by Design

We designed vanish mode with safety and choice in mind, so you control your experience. Only people youâre connected to can use vanish mode with you in a chat. Vanish mode is also opt-in, so you choose whether to enter vanish mode with someone. If someone takes a screenshot of your chat while youâre using vanish mode, youâll be notified. And as always, you can block someone and report a conversation if you feel unsafe.

As we roll out vanish mode we want to make sure people understand how it works, so, when you first swipe up, youâll see a screen that explains key features, including more details on blocking and reporting.

Weâre slowly rolling out vanish mode on Messenger and Instagram. Vanish mode is now available on Messenger in the US and a handful of other countries, and itâs coming soon to more places. Vanish mode on Instagram will be coming to the US and other countries soon, when you update to the new Messenger experience. Stay tuned for more features and fun!

Facebook, Messenger and Instagram apps coming to Windows 10

Today, we are excited to share that the official Facebook app and Messenger app for Windows 10 PCs and Tablets, and the official Instagram app for Windows 10 mobile are rolling out and will be available later today in the Windows Store.

Designed to run quickly and easily within Windows 10 and have the most up-to-date features, Facebook built Windows-only experiences into all three of these apps such as Live Tiles, which lets you quickly see new posts, messages and photos right from your home screen.

Facebook

Keeping up with friends is faster than ever with the new Facebook app for Windows 10, the best way to experience Facebook on Windows. With Live Tiles, you can easily find out what your friends and family are up to at a glance. And now, reading and sharing articles from News Feed is quick and easy with an in-app browser. Other features include Reactions, stickers in comments, notifications so that you don’t miss important updates, and a right-hand column that shows birthday, event reminders and trending topics.

Messenger

Along with many of your favorite features of Facebook’s Messenger — like photo sharing, stickers, group conversations and GIFs — Messenger for Windows 10 PCs has desktop notifications so you never miss an important message. And when you pin the app to your Start menu you’ll get notified of new messages with Live Tiles.

Instagram

The team over at Instagram is rolling out Instagram for Windows 10 mobile with all of the community’s favorite features — including Direct Messaging, updated Search and Explore, Videos and Account Switching. Instagram also supports Live Tiles, so if you pin the app to your home screen you’ll get notifications from Instagram right on your start screen.

We’re thrilled to have this collection of apps available from Facebook for Windows 10 users coming to the Windows Store to download for free today and we’re excited to share that more great experiences from Facebook will be coming to Windows 10 mobile soon – stay tuned. New Accounts Center on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger

Switching apps to post the same content or entering your credit card information dozens of times is a pain. We want to make that easier while giving you better controls to manage your experience. Whether you want to share a story to Instagram and Facebook at the same time, or use your Facebook account to log into Instagram, setting up your Accounts Center will allow you to control connected experiences that work across our apps.

Starting this week we’re testing Accounts Center in settings on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.

What controls do I have in Accounts Center?

Using Accounts Center and connected experiences is optional. In Accounts Center you can easily turn any of these connected experiences off or on including Single Sign On, which lets you log in and recover your accounts more easily, and cross-posting, which lets you share the same story or post on both Instagram and Facebook. And later this year, we’ll add Facebook Pay to Accounts Center. In the US, you can enter your payment information once on Facebook and then use Facebook Pay to make secure purchases and donations across Facebook and Instagram.

Using Accounts Center doesn’t mean you need to have the same identity across all our apps – you can still choose to be Aisha Ahmed on Facebook, for example, and @bakersdozen on your Instagram account. However, you can sync your name and profile photo across our apps. That way, if you change your name or your profile photo on Facebook, it will update on Instagram as well. If you change your mind, you can stop your name and profile photos from syncing going forward.

How does setting up Accounts Center affect data use across our apps?

We use information across our apps to personalize your experience and show you more relevant content, including ads. Setting up and using Accounts Center won’t change that. We also use information about activity on our apps to improve our services and keep them safe, for example, to help identify and remove accounts that violate our policies, and to keep your accounts secure. To ensure these new features work seamlessly, we’ll continue to use information across our apps when you set up your Accounts Center. We’ll also use your information to personalize experiences across accounts, like suggested friends and accounts to follow. Facebook Introducing Messenger Rooms and More Ways to Connect

Facebook’s products have always been about connecting people. Over the years we’ve focused on how to help people feel present with one another even when they’re not in the same place. Today, video helps most of us bridge the distance. Tomorrow, we’ll be turning to more immersive platforms like AR and VR.

Lately Facebook has felt the demand for real-time video. Between WhatsApp and Messenger, more than 700 million accounts participate in calls every day. In many countries, video calling on Messenger and WhatsApp more than doubled, and views of Facebook Live and Instagram Live videos increased significantly in March. But there’s more to do to make real-time feel real.

Spending time with each other should be spontaneous, not strained. So to help people feel like they’re together, even when they are — or have to be — physically apart, we’re announcing features across our products that make video chat and live video easier and more natural.

Introducing Messenger Rooms

Messenger Rooms make it easy to spend quality time with friends, loved ones and people who share your interests. Create a room right from Messenger or Facebook, and invite anyone to join your video call, even if they don’t have a Facebook account. Rooms will soon hold up to 50 people with no time limit.

Host celebrations, gather a book club or just hang out on the couch with friends. You don’t need to call someone and hope it’s a good time or check everyone’s calendar first. You can start and share rooms on Facebook through News Feed, Groups and Events, so it’s easy for people to drop by. Soon we’ll add ways to create rooms from Instagram Direct, WhatsApp and Portal, too.

If your friends or communities create rooms that are open to you, you’ll see them on Facebook so you can find things to do and people to hang out with. When you’re invited to a room, you can join from your phone or computer — no need to download anything to get started. If you have the Messenger app, you can play with AR effects like bunny ears, and new AI-powered features like immersive 360 backgrounds and mood lighting.

When you create a room, you choose who can see and join it. You can remove people from the call and lock a room if you don’t want anyone else to enter. Read more about the controls you have and how we built Rooms with privacy and security in mind.

Messenger Rooms is rolling out in some countries this week and will expand to the rest of the world in coming weeks.

Expanding WhatsApp Group Calls

WhatsApp calls are another way to stay in touch. Soon you’ll be able to have group voice and video calls with up to eight people on WhatsApp. As before, these calls are secured with end-to-end encryption so no one else can view or listen to your private conversation, not even WhatsApp.

New Live Video Features for Facebook, Instagram and Portal

People are turning to Facebook Live and Instagram Live for workout classes, cooking lessons, faith services and more, so we’re adding features to make them even more useful.

On Facebook…

We’re bringing back Live With so you can add another person into your live video, no matter where they are in the world. Bring on a guest speaker, interview an expert or perform with a friend.

You’ll be able to mark Facebook Events as online only and, in the coming weeks, integrate Facebook Live so you can broadcast to your guests. To support creators and small businesses, we plan to add the ability for Pages to charge for access to events with Live videos on Facebook – anything from online performances to classes to professional conferences.

To help you raise money for causes, you can now add the donate button to live videos wherever nonprofit fundraisers are available.

We’re making it easier to access live video so you can watch or listen anywhere. If you have limited data or a spotty connection, you now have the option to listen to the audio only. If you don’t have a Facebook account, most public live videos are now available on the web and some Pages can share a toll-free number that lets you listen to the audio through any telephone.

You can livestream games from your phone to Facebook using the new Facebook Gaming app available on Google Play. The app also lets you play games instantly, watch your favorite streamers and discover new gaming groups. Tournaments are another new feature for game streaming that lets you create, play and watch the competition in one spot. Tournaments are available on Facebook today, and coming to the Facebook Gaming app soon.

To help you support some of your favorite creators, we’re expanding Stars to more Pages and more countries. Once you buy Stars you can send them to creators while they’re streaming, and they’ll earn 1 cent for every Star.

On Instagram…

You can now watch and comment on live videos from your desktop. Follow along with that yoga class on a bigger screen or listen to a live performance as you work.

After you go live, you’ll soon be able to save your videos to IGTV so they stick around longer than the 24-hour limit in Stories and are easier for others to find.

On Portal…

You’ll soon be able to go live from Portal to Facebook Pages and Groups. The Facebook Live app on Portal already lets you broadcast to your profile, but later this month you’ll be able to share with your communities, too. Whether you’re sharing a make-up or baking tutorial or hosting a more intimate conversation, Portal’s AI-powered Smart Camera can be your personal cinematographer, keeping you perfectly framed, so you can stay present in the moment.

Messenger Kids Global Expansion and New Features

Messenger Kids can help kids stay in touch with friends and family in a fun, parentally-supervised environment. We started expanding the free video calling and messaging app to more than 70 countries and adding new options to help parents connect kids with their friends.

Set Up a Virtual Date in Facebook Dating

To help people find meaningful relationships even when they can’t meet in person, we’re adding an option in Facebook Dating to invite people to a virtual date. When they accept, you’ll start a video chat in Messenger to get to know each other. This will roll out in the coming months.
