Failed upgrade from 1909 to 2004 - no clues

Hello... I'm trying to upgrade my own home PC from 1909 to 2004, and it rolls back midway through the process without any error message or anything. Thing is, I work as an IT technician and have upgraded 40-50 machines in my domain to 2004 (wsus, pendrive and so on) without ever seeing anything like this.

I already tried removing all usb devices, which should be a common cause for what I have seen. If it's worth mentioning, this installation succesfully upgraded from other windows 10 versions multiple times in the past, without hardware changes and without important changes in software... I use it mainly as a home studio workstation, so there's not a lot of software apart from cubase and its plugins, which I don't really think should interfere with the upgrade.

So I'm attaching the setuperr.log here taken from C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther... it's the only clue I have since, as I've said before, there's no other message error or anything. As you will see, it's from the last attempt I made almost one month ago, then I've given up.

    setuperr.log

    :)

    Windows 10 upgrade 1909 to 2004 failed with error 0x8007042b - 0x4000D

    Hi,

I've been trying to upgrade my Windows 10 installation (1909 to 2004), and having tried a lot of things without success It always rolls back the upgrade with the following error message:

Error 0x8007042b - 0x4000D The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation

Regular Windows updates for 1909 works properly and I get updated as needed. In my attempts to perform the upgrade I've been trying everything I could including:

    1. run DISM and SFC commands to fix corruptions (there aren't any)
    2. remove softwaredistribution folder
    3. remove Avast AV
    4. perform clean boot
    5. perform upgrade from media creation tool

I really need some help to investigate the log files to determine the root cause as reinstalling without apps will be extremely painful in my case. I've prepared the following files and can share directly with any advisor who will be willing to take a look
(if more are needed I can provide):

    • Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther
    • Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback

    Thanks in advance,

    AZY

Update from 1909 to 2004 fail for Error 0xc1900209

Hi, that looks as if it's a UEFI installation.

I'm wondering where your 16Mb Reserved partition is...

    See e.g.
Recover Deleted System Reserved Partition in Windows 10/8/7 – EaseUS
where e.g. Method 3 may help.

    I commented:
Apart from the partition issue, I suggested you could try upgrading after a clean boot.

    1909 vs 2004

I thought (maybe) or suggested (possibly) this seemed to be true immediately with 2004, but after being with it for a few days I do find & feel 2004 superior to 1909. No, this isn't from fancy lab set ups & testing
or Swiss stop-watches... nothing but, plain ole everyday use.

2004, same hardware, same software, definitely is faster, snappier, more responsive & more fluid than 1909 (was).

    Cheers,

    Drew
