    Hey there,

Apologies in advance. I posted this elsewhere as a reply on an apparently dead thread, so I'll repost it here. I'm hoping by reposting with a clearer title may help someone else with same problem. If the other thread does unexpectedly get a response, I'll link that thread here.

I'm trying to upgrade from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro, but I keep getting the error message 0xC1900101 - 0x30017 failed during the "FIRST_BOOT" phase with an error during BOOT operation. I've spent many hours over several the last several weekends, reviewing multiple checklist and simple hacks people have discovered, but still no luck for me. I found a very useful post for checklist before upgrading, but still no luck for me. Here a link: https://www.groovypost.com/howto/prepare-computer-windows-10-creators-update-version-1703/

My most basic question now is that I just discovered my Lenovo Thinkpad E520 is actually not listed on Lenovo's Windows 10 compatibility list. I had no problem updating on a near identical Thinkpad, but I just realized that was E530 purchased about a year later. Here's a link to Lenovo's compatibility list as of May 2019. https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht508488

I'm just surprised that I was able to get as far and the initial 100% update on Window 7, through the restart, and then successfully starting the actual Windows 10 installation process up to 30% (basically around 90min to this point). At this point, it does the expected restart, but then gets the error, and reverts back to Windows 7.

Would this be consistent with an incompatibility issue? I would have just assumed I would have been blocked at a much earlier stage. I feel like I got really far into the process.

    To review:

    1) Bios updated and all device drivers updated (using Lenovo Website, and confirmed with Intel site). Windows updated as well.

    2) Ran off USB media and ISO, with internet LAN and WIFI disconnected

    3) Antivirus uninstalled, an Windows Defender off realtime (if that matters). Not sure if there's a way to fully disable it.

    4) Hard drive decrypted, and secure boot loader disabled.

    5) All USB ports now empty, including the wireless mouse (if that matters)

    6) Attempted to turn off display adapter driver (Intel HD Graphics Family) but screen when black and wouldn't recover. Had to do hard restart and reset bios with battery out to get working again.

    7) Clean boot mode.

I read that some people (different computers) discovered a hack that if they entered Bios at the 30% restart point and then did a hard restart, then it would successfully restart updating again. This would then get them to a 70% restart point, where they would have to do the same thing. This would eventually complete with a successful Windows 10 boot. I tried this earlier in my process stage, but admittedly not as a clean install. I may need to try again, since it's been pretty difficult to catch the right moment. You really do have to babysit the machine so as not to miss the 30% restart.

So, I guess that's my question. Should I keep at it? Would an incompatible machine have been able to get this far through the install? Are there any drivers on my E530 that I could manually install in the E520 that would help me bypass this problem?

Has anyone successfully updated Windows 10 from either a Lenovo E520 or another unlisted machine?

I've got 4 of these machines at work that otherwise work fine right now, but don't want to risk security issues after Microsoft stops supporting Windows 7. If I just need to accept the facts and move on, I turn my energy into looking for new machines. But it feels like such a shame to abandon these functioning laptops.

    Thanks to all in advance.

    :)
