Ref: Failed Windows update KB4052623 for Defender antimalware platform giving error code 0x80240017, then DISM.exe said “Error: 1392 The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable”.

I was having some trouble with my laptop running Win10 over recent days and so decided to do a clean install using a Windows 10 installation media DVD that I had used to make a clean install on the same computer about 1 year ago. The computer seemed to have worked pretty ok since the clean install one year ago.

Several attempts to do Automatic repair, Startup repair, Reset My PC keeping my files, etc. had all failed to complete. I therefore decided to do a clean install by booting up from the Windows 10 installation media DVD and deleting all existing partitions on the hard drive.

The first attempt to delete all partitions and reinstall using the Win10 installation media DVD also failed at the stage of setting up a user alongside Cortana instructions at the end of installation process.

The second attempt to reinstall using the Win10 installation media DVD has appeared to work.

However, the following Windows Update then failed giving the result as described:

Windows update KB4052623 for Defender antimalware platform failed to install giving error code 0x80240017. Then I used “Get Help” link on the update history page which opens a “Virtual Agent”. In response to the error code, the Virtual Agent then recommended to do “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” in the “Command prompt Admin” or “Powershell Admin”. The “Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool” started to install or fix the “Image Version: 10.0.18362.900” and reached 5.2% completed before it gave “Error: 1392 The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log”.

Please could you advise :

Q1. How serious is this? Does this suggest that perhaps the hard drive is faulty and so it is perhaps worth changing the hard drive?

Q2. How to know if the corrupted or unreadable area can be repaired? An how to repair it?

Q3. Is it worth to do “chkdsk”? Or rather “chkdsk/r”? I have just launched “Error checking” of the C’drive in Properties/Tools.

I have tried so many solutions for this. None of those work. Windows defender updates has been issue since I've installed this.

I keep getting this fail error - • Update for Windows Defender antimalware platform - KB4052623 (Version 4.12.17007.17123) - Error 0x80070643 Has anyone else run into this or know a solution?
