Fall Creators Update - Now image back up

I have belayed my update, to latest version of W10, as I understand the old windows 7 imaging files that were still available up to now have dissappeared from yesterdays major update. Does anyone know where the original executables are so perhaps copy them and use them in the new version. Or do we really have to go to third party to do an drive image now. Mike

    :)

  2. File explorer not showning hard drives after 2017 fall creator update

I did. Made some changes, restarted and system would not boot up (No operating system found). Fortunately, I imaged the system drive prior to upgrading. Currently running pre-fall creator version. Additional info, ran the fall creator update again,
same issue. Reverted back to pre-fall creator version. Awaiting additional input/assistance. Thanks.

    fault with fall creators update

    Folks

I put on the Fall Creators Update 2 days ago and have reverted it to standard Creators Update and replaced it again with the Fall Creators Update.

Problem is the same on both systems (i.e. both Fall Creators Update systems). Whereas DISM with its various switches worked perfectly well with the Creators Update, (and before that) - with the Fall Creators Update using the string

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth

DISM returns an error code 193 and will not clean up the Windows files. Any ideas folks or is this a known bug with a fix in the pipeline ?

    Thanks

MS is deprecating Win 7 Backup and Restore and recommending 3rd party.

Numerous times here we have recommended, reviewed and discussed disk imaging solutions; Macrium Reflect (free) is thought the most reliable in all circumstances, but others have a simpler GUI and organisation.

3rd party solutions have been found to be more reliable and feature rich, maintained and supported.

I've got the latest update to Windows 10, version 1709, build 16299.64. The old, still unreliable Windows built-in system image and restore is still available:

When I run it, task manager shows it as C:\Windows\System32\sdclt.exe

I don't know what other associated files are required.

If you have old system image files from previous Windows installations and you want to attempt to retain the ability to restore them, what I would is create a system image now with Macrium Reflect Free and move on. If if you really, really want to go back to one of those old Windows system image files, and you discover your up-to-date current build of Windows 10 no longer has that function, restore the Macrium Reflect Image of the Windows that did. Then use that to attempt restore the old, rickety, unreliable Windows image file.

No, 'Backup & restore (Windows 7)' is still there in Fall Creators Update, along with its 'create a system image' option. For how much longer is a good question though. It's not been removed yet, but it is a deprecated feature, meaning it may be removed in future versions.

Features removed or Deprecated in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

The built in Microsoft imaging is temperamental and unreliable, and I speak as one who uses it regularly. You (and I) should start looking for alternatives. Many on these boards recommend Macrium Reflect (free).

For future reference, the command line to start the imaging directly is: %windir%\System32\sdclt.exe /BLBBACKUPWIZARD

If you really must preserve an old system feature that's been removed (or is going to be) then there are two files you need to copy to another folder. The first is the .exe and the second is its .mui file. I wouldn't recommend trying to keep the old system imaging, but there are some who would miss the old MSPaint.

You need to copy the mspaint.exe from %windir%\System32 to a new folder, and the mspaint.exe.mui from the %windir%\System32\en-gb folder to an en-gb folder in your new folder (for a UK system, that is. On a US system it's the en-us folder). You can then run MSPaint from your new folder.

An alterative way to be able to restore an old image would be to make a Recovery Drive USB (no need to include system files) and boot from that to restore an image created by the old imaging system. A Recovery Drive made by 1709 or earlier includes the image restore functions.

I guess Macrium is the way to go. Wonder what other stuff MS will be leaving out. Rather like Business Contact Manager in Office, because they want you to buy their own expensive crm software! We will be paying for MS10 soon I wouldnt be surprised.

I have literally lost count of the number of times I've restored a 1709 system image on my test machine. Mine's an MBR system though, your link was having these problems on UEFI systems.

Even if Windows System Image Backup works after the Fall Creators Update, it seems like the kind of thing that will work until it doesn’t, and then it’s too late to switch. Just my opinion.
