Windows 10: Family Controls

Hi all,


My son has a new Win 10 laptop for school and I have set up screen time limits and content restrictions. Over the last few months i have noticed erratic appliction of screen time limits and the content restrictions are not working for games he has installed without my knowledge (I really hope they’re working for the browsers....).


What I have done so far:

• I’m set up as an Admin user and he is a standard user.
• His user account is verified (I’ve done this several times over the past few months).
• I’ve checked that automatic updates are turned on (several times) & run mannualy.
• Set separate time restrictions for his laptop and the family x-box.
• Content Controlls are set to PG - yet he seems to be able to play MA games??
• Logged him off & on several times.
• Deleted the “Parent Control” folder in program data>microsoft>windows> (several times from my admin account)
• I’ve restarted the laptop after each change.

From my 2 hours of reading threads on the web this seems to be a long running issue with Microsoft Family/Safety, especially after updates which are regular. I had screen time issues 4 days ago, I ran the update manually and it fixed the screen time issue. Now there’s been another update and screen time setting are not working again....


Has anyone else found a permanent fix?

You should not encounter this problem if you have a Microsoft Account that is tagged as an adult. To disable family features and turn off family settings on Windows 10, I suggest that you follow the steps outlined in these support articles:

Make sure you're signed in with your Microsoft account to
account.microsoft.com/family.

Microsoft Family Screen Time

Hi Laurel,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community forum.

This could happen when the child account fails to sync with the server. I suggest you to try the steps listed below and check if it works:

• Open
  File Explorer and navigate to the following location:
• C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Parental Controls
  
  
  Note:
  The above mentioned directory is hidden, copy and paste the same location on the search bar in the File Explorer to access it.
  
• Delete the contents in the
  \\settings directory of the Parental Controls folder.
  
• Reboot the machine to see if the issue persists.
  

If the issue persists, you may want to remove the child account from Microsoft family and add it again.

Windows 10 Family Safety is blocking my browser!!!

Can you confirm if you are out of the Family Safety feature on your parent's account on this
link? If you've confirmed that you're no longer on the list of monitored child accounts, we suggest deleting the Family Safety folder. Here are the steps:

• Press Windows key + E on your keyboard.
• On the address bar, type this address C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Parental Controls and press
  Enter.
• Delete all contents of the Parental Controls folder.
• Restart and see if the issue is resolved.
