  2. The POST isn't skipped, you just get a truncated version of it. If you turn the BIOS Fast Boot option off, you see more status messages on screen. Status messages as it enumerates hardware etc. Turn it on and the extra info isn't displayed and you boot up quicker. I can still access my BIOS and BIOS quick boot menu with it on so I leave it on.

  3. Okay, probably like most people today in 2017, I'm using an SSD, I'm on my 3rd or 4th SSD drive at this point even my mom has an SSD in her computer now. What is the point of Fast Boot? I notice with it on me (and other people) get phantom touches on the screeen and perhaps other problems, but with it off, there is no noticable change in boot time.. Yes, on an SSD with fast boot off from power off the computer still boots up in maybe 2 seconds. What kind of short sighted person foreseeing an ancient world run off rotary hard drives would try to speed up booting off those drives when we no longer really use them anymore. With modern drives, we don't need fast boot, it just causes problems.

For an ssd, there is limited benefit.

You are being extremely harsh about HDD users.

I bet well over 80% of pcs in existence still boot off hdds. It is only in the affluent countries that people can afford SSDs.

BTW: This forum does not really appreciate such harshness - as this is your first post, we can be more forgiving, but please bear in mind for future posts.

  5. The writing of the hiperfile.sys file every time you shut down can be a determent to an SSD. IMHO anyway. Still many many people with spinner dives out there though. I still have one desktop PC with one for its only drive. I still don't use Windows Fast Startup though. I'll take a reliable boot up over crossing my fingers and hoping it boots up Ok anyday.

My 2cents: Yep, I'm one of those 80%'er's that still use a HDD. That said, mine is left on from default install and has never given me any issues. Although I may just turn it off and see what happens. Could be an interesting experiment.

  7. I appreciate your ability to be forgiving, but please understand i haven't worked in 15+ years and am basically on welfare and buy my SSDs with my welfare check money (SSDI, not related to SSD). I suppose i am just out of touch with the fact that outside of my world people are still using older technologies.

By the way, I am probably high functioning autism, diagnosed once in 2010 and not treated, and i took a test online yesterday which matched, so that may affect the way i behave. I ask that you factor in disabilities when you consider how you treat your users, don't discriminate based on them.

Fast boot, is it a good thing or bad ?

My PCs boot from an SSD. Windows fast start up in not much faster so I turned it off. The BIOS fast boot can create some oddities. I have one PC where the Gigabyte ultra fast boot option doesn't recognise the keyboard when using the safe menu boot options but works using the standard fast boot option.

In the end, it is rather pointless trying to generalise on whether fastboot is good or not. For many it works, for some it does not.

    Answer is simple:-

Try it - if you get issues, turn it off - end of story.

  10. I do not like SSD, period (driver issues and others), and I will never ever buy one. I have short-stroked my HDD to boost its speed. Newer is not always better, just like CRTs were better in every way, but they have been replaced by LCD anyway.

It seems some Radeon graphics users with multi-monitor setups may be experiencing problems with fast startup after the CU - related to the different driver installed.

  12. Drive issues? I've never installed a driver for an SSD, they generally do not need drivers (maybe 1st generation ssds on old versions of windows prior to windows 8 or old motherboards did). There are two types of ssds i worked with, one the 2.5" type works just like any other SATA hard drive to the system, you plug it in the same way and to the system it is just a really fast SATA drive.. The other, my first experience this week, an m.2, you just drop it in make sure bios recognizes it (might have to make sure bios is auto/sata mode for m.2 port) again treats it like any SATA drive, you can raw install windows or whatever else (such as hackintosh or whatever) right onto the ssd without concern for drivers.

There is nothing inherent in Fast boot that is either good or bad. It is good in some situations and not in others.
Windows is designed for a wide and diverse market and for a wide range of different hardware. In some situations Ready boot is a good thing, in others, not so good, and in others it is hard to say. If it was always good there would be no provision to turn it off. If it was always bad it never would have been provided at all.

    As for SSDs.
There is little doubt that at some time in the future they will completely replace conventional drives. Conventional drives will no longer be sold and the only place they will be found is in a museum and old collections. We will marvel that such primitive things were ever used. I have lived long enough to see this kind of thing more than once.

I thought I would try this (turning OFF fast boot) to see the difference, if any, that this made. I use an SSD and know that W10 boots up in 11 seconds consistently, day in day out. It never varies.

With fast boot off that has increased to nearer 20 seconds. Fwiw, I can not say I have ever encountered an issue with using fast boot.
