Windows 10: Fast startup not working

Hello,

I'm having difficulties getting fast startup to work on a brand new PC (built a month ago) running Win10 Home x64

And I do mean windows' fast startup feature, not fast boot in BIOS, which is currently disabled


At first I noticed recuring Kernel-Boot errors in the events viewer, indicating that Windows had failed fast startup with error 0xC00000D4

I came across this tutorial which explains that "If you disable hibernate, then it will also disable fast startup"

So I re-enabled hibernate using the command powercfg /h /type reduced as per this other tutorial

All the Kernel-Boot errors are gone, except fast startup is still not working...


Now, everytime I boot up my computer, I get a Kernel-Power error in the events viewer saying "the system has rebooted without clearly shutting down first"

When I power up my PC, I get to see my motherboard's logo then my computer goes all quiet like it completly shut down, my monitor even displays a "entering power saving mode" message

This lasts just for a few seconds before the desktop appears on screen

Checking with windows powershell, it says "boot type was 0x0" which means a cold boot


Aside from this fast startup issue, my PC works just fine, no random reboots nor freezes nor crashes whatsoever

I could disable fast startup altogether, but I'm willing to try to get it to work first

Fast Startup not working but hibernate is working.

I ran chkdsk on my 4 storage drives it rebooted and went on scanning and repairing. It went on for 4 hours and I didn't connected my laptop to ac power so it turned off . Suddenly I realised it and connected to power and turned on. It went on again and
took 6 hours to complete and rebooted. And now fast startup not working now.

I understand that the fast startup is not working after the check disk in your PC. We will help you.

To assist you better, I suggest you to answer the below questions.

• What issue were you facing to perform the check disk?
• Are you getting any error messages?
• What is the make and model of your PC?
• Which Edition of Windows 10 are you using?

I suggest you to follow the below steps and check if it helps.

Using Group Policy Editor:

Note: This option for using group policy is only available in the Windows 10 Pro editions.

• Press Windows Key + R combination and put gpedit.msc in
  Run dialog box.
• In the left pane navigate to:

• Now look in the right pane, you’ll got the policy named Require use of fast startup as shown above.
• Double click on this policy to get the window shown below.
• Now you can use following settings:
• Force “Hybrid boot” to be always turned on = Enable
• Do NOT force “Hybrid boot” to be always turned on = Disabled/Not configured
  (Default Setting)
• After making changes click Apply followed by OK.

Restart the machine and check if it helps. Keep us posted to help you better.

 

Have you tried it with powercfg /h /type full

 

Powercfg /h off

Type chkdsk C: /F

Type y to accept scan after restart.

Shutdown your PC "not restart"

Turn PC back on

Let chkdsk check for errors, and system will reboot.

Open elevated command prompt

Powercfg /h on

Re enable fast startup

Shutdown and test.

Just tried both of your suggestions, unfortunately I'm still getting the damn Kernel-Power error, and boot type is still 0x0

 

Are there any devices besides the keyboard and mouse that are connected? If you have lots of USB devices plugged in, try unplugging them, and retrying.

In rare cases "With a preinstalled system", it's possible a bad image could cause the fast startup not to work.

I worked on a PC where a lot of stuff wasn't working " Fast startup, wouldn't restart, constant freezes", and after diagnosis, I had determined that the hard disk was failing due to bad sectors being found.

I replaced the hard drive, reinstalled Windows, and the problems were gone.

You're issue may be different, but it's either a hardware issue, or a software issue preventing fast startup from working.

 

Nope, only keyboard and mouse


Disabled hibernate and fast startup yesterday, and no Kernel-Boot error was reported in the events viewer today

Checking the net, found someone who solved this problem by deleting everything inside the Prefetch folder, I think I'll give that a try
