Feature Update 1903 failed a number of times

    Hi to all,

Feature update 1903 has failed repeatedly for months.

I've looked at a number of threads on this forum, and tried a number of suggestions, unsuccessfully.

If I check for updates, it tries to work on a 1903 update.
Disk goes to 100%, and it VERY slowly updates the % counter for the update/install.
I let this run earlier this week, and it took over 7 hours.

Appears successful, and asks for reboot.

After reboot, up date failed again.

Update history shows 7 fails since June 27 2019.
    1809 was installed successfully Dec 21st 2018.
Since June, numerous other updates hace been installed with success.

    Last update attempt returned:

    <<<

Feature update to Windows 10, version 1903

Last failed install attempt on ‎19-‎Apr-‎20 - 0xc1900101

    >>>

    Also,
ran the troubleshooter, which ran sucessfully, and finished with 'apply repairs automatically'.
Did this, but with no change whatsoever.

Yesterday, I went to the MS site and downloaded 4505057 1903 for x64 successfully.
When I tried to run install the .msu I got the message

'update not applicable to your computer kb4505057'

    My Question is:

A number of threads suggest, almost as the last thing to try, downloading an ISO and installing.

I am familiar with this in a Linux environment.

    Q.

In Win10, if I do this this, will it PROTECT ,or will it overwrite my data, settings, installed programs??? etcetc

Data is backed up weekly ofcourse to an external drive.

    Thanks.

    :)

  2. Windows Feature Update 1903

    Hi Sara209

Greetings! I am Vijay, an Independent Advisor. The steps which you have undertaken to block updates won't work for any feature update. Feature updates need to be blocked temporarily by using different steps.

But, I will suggest that you should not try to stop 1903 feature update. Let it happen.

Do let me know if you have any more question or require further help.

Feature Update 1903 failed a number of times

OK, I've been looking into this problem on and off for a while now, and decided I need some advice.

Standard HP desktop, Win10, all updates previously successfull.

    Symptom.

On any restart/reboot, the system stays (doesnt hang) on the blue screen for many minutes (yesterday was 23mins) and then starts.

When running, is very slow for another 10 minutes.

Task manager shows 100% disk usage by windows update.

    Settles, and then works fine.

    Problem.

    Feature update 1903 has failed.

Update history shows 7 fails since June 27 2019.

    1809 was installed successfully Dec 21st 2018.

Since June, numersous other updates hace been installed with success.

    (ie .NET 4535101, 4538122 and 4538156)

    Oddly,

since June 27, 1809 (Cumulative) updates are still being installed OK.

    8th Jan 2020, 4530715

    16th Jan, 4530715 (again!!)

    25th Jan, 4534273

    22nd Feb, 4532691

28th Feb, Update (not cumulative) 4538156

    Another symptom.

If I check for updates, it tries to work on a 1903 update.

Disk goes to 100%, and it VERY slowly updates the % counter for the update/install.

I let this run earlier this week, and it took over 7 hours.

Its not downloading, as the same occurs with the ethernet cable pulled.

I saw one message 'searching for updates'.

Yesterday, I went to the MS site and downloaded 4505057 (1903 for x64) successfully.

When I tried to run (install the .msu) I got the message

'update not applicable to your computer kb4505057'

which, on searching, includes the meaning that the update 'MAY' already be applied.

    Also,

ran the troubleshooter, which ran sucessfully, and finished with 'apply repairs automatically'.

Did this, but with no change whatsoever.

    Now I am stuck.

I dont have 1903 or 1909, and 2003 will be along soon.

I dont want an out of date system.

And I dont want a massive wait on reboot each time.

And I DO NOT want to refresh the OS, which will be the base recommndation from some of you good people.

Is there anyone out there with a smart idea or a smart fix??

    Thanks.

Feature Update 1903 failed a number of times

    Hi Jai,

I am Sumit, an Independent Advisor and a 3 year Windows Insider MVP here to help.

Try updating to 1909 using Media Creation tool and if it fails, share the logs.

The fastest way to get the upgrade is through Media creation tool or ISO file.

Please download Media Creation Tool from the link below and select Upgrade this PC at the first screen.

    https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209

All steps, including upgrading using ISO file and Media creation tool, are covered here:

    https://www.yourwindowsguide.com/2019/05/update...

Meanwhile, if the update fails with MCT as well.

Let us check the Installation log to find why the update failed. Please share the logs as mentioned in this article. You should use a File sharing service like Onedrive or Media Fire to upload files and share the link in the next reply.

The Rollback logs: These usually are created if Windows Update rolls back. Files named Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback
