Windows 10: Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803 x64 2019-05C (5). Failed - Error 0x80240034

My PC is running Windows 10 Pro v1709 OS build 16299.847 and has consistently failed to install the feature update via Windows Update (I've lost count of the number of times this has failed) so I used the media creation tool to download the latest feature update to a USB stick.
I logged into my PC as local administrator and ran setup.exe from the USB. I accepted the recommended action to download drivers and optional features and kept personal files and apps. The installation process took an hour and appeared to complete but then produced the dialog "Windows 10 installation has failed".

Settings/ installed update history states
"Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803 x64 2019-05C (5)
Last failed install attempt on 17/08/2019 - 0x80240034"

setupact.log and setuperr.log from C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther

checkpoint.info rollbackinfo.ini and TrackedVolumes.ini from C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Rollback (there were no log files in this folder)


Can someone check these files and actually identify what is causing the feature update to continually fail to install. I've previously searched these forums but couldn't find any sensible answers, only endless links listing every possible issue which could affect a PC.

Update version 1803 (3) always fails with error 0x80240034

That error code means the download could not complete successfully....

In such cases, an in-place upgrade using an ISO made by Microsoft's Media Creation Tool should succeed where windows update fails. Note that the MCT now makes install media for the current version which is 1809. That should not be a problem and would be the version I'd use in your place (and am using on my PC). But if you really insist on upgrading to 1803 you'll need to use an 1803 ISO. This 3rd-party tool from Heidoc can generate a link to get one direct from Microsoft.

Update version 1803 (3) always fails with error 0x80240034


Every time my Windows 10 tries to update to the latest version of Windows 10, I always get the following error messages:


Feature update to Windows 10, version 1803 (3)
Last failed install attempt on ‎11/‎25/‎2018 - 0x80240034

Googling the update tells me that the update was released in June. This means that this update has been failing for six straight months.

Does anybody know how to fix this?
