Windows 10: File Explorer fails to sort photos in creation date

I am compiling an album of vacation photos and need to sort them by creation date as there may be some filename changes and photoediting involved.

The files are sourced from a camera SD card and two samsung smartphones. The sort by creation date appears to sort the files in the folders in batches of where they were sourced even when the filenames (originally allocated by the camera or phone) are totally different.


Can someone tell me how to REALlY sort a folder by creation date and nothing else?

Sorting with File Explorer.

I tried the method that was complicated (3rd option) but fell over in second step as I could not find any "apply to folder button"'.

However, the simple put *.* in search bar, then sort results windows by date does the trick. It is slightly cumbersome as I have to do that each time I am selecting files (to upload to sharepoint) but a lot less hassle than I was having to scroll up and down between sorted file block and sorted folder block.

How to sort photos in Windows essentials photo gallery.

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you want to sort your pictures in the way you want them. Kindly take note that the only options to sort your photos in Photo Gallery are the following:

• Date taken
• Date modified
• File size
• Image size
• Rating
• Caption
• File name

Also I suggest follow the below steps.

Press ALT + W + K, one after other & check if the photos are shown in the order they were taken.

File Explorer Date Sort Issue

In File Explorer, click on the View Ribbon Tab

Click on the Creation Date column header, so that arrow faces down, if that does not sort newest to oldest, please provide a screenshot of the resulting File Explorer Window and I will try to resolve this for you
