Windows 10: File Explorer Not Responding

Windows pushed an update the week of February 25th and now right clicking and scrolling/hovering over New freezes up File Explorer. This just started happening but I am aware of this being an issue in the past about a year ago and all the tips are pretty dated and the tricks have not fixed my issue.


Clearing the recent files, running the command prompt script as admin has not been successful. Neither has System File Checker.


I can, however, make new folders by duplicating an already existing folder and then renaming it but this is not a solution.


Does anyone have some tips or tricks that may be a solution?

We are not sure whether or not you have tried the above suggestion. If haven’t tried, follow the methods suggested above and check if the issue is resolved.



If the issue persists, scan the PC for the presence of virus/malware by running the antivirus security software. Run the antivirus security software twice to detect and confirm the presence of malware/virus on your PC. Check for the status of the scan
to view the presence of virus/malware.

Windows 10 file explorer not responding

following ALL of the above steps did nothing. explorer.exe still broken.

additional steps taken:

1x system refresh, explorer still dead

1x clean boot, explorer still dead

3x sfc /scannow, rebooted in between, explorer still dead

1x restore point, all programs uninstalled, explorer worked for 4 hours, then died.

1x reset, explorer still never opened

1x reverted back to 8.1, explorer woked, autoupdated to 10, explorer died

1x COMPLETE WIPE, reinstalled 8.1, autoupdated to 10, explorer died.

wiping again. reeinstalling 8.1. turning off updates for good.

amazing this CRITICAL issue exists at all.
