  1. File Explorer Search Options Not Presented Until After Initial Search

I frequently use the Search function of File Explorer very heavily, changes imposed with Feature Update 1909 have impacted the effective use of the tool for me. Previously, the Search options tab opened immediately upon the user's selecting the Search Box - which allowed the user to select the desired search options BEFORE initiating a search.

Since Feature Update 1909 File Explorer's Search options tab is not presented until after an argument is keyed into the Search BoxAND the initial search is launched using the DEFAULT search options, i.e., All Subfolders. The user is unable to specify non-default options Current Folder, Contents, Date Modified etc. until after the initial search has begun.

    Does anyone know how to:

    > cause File Explorer to go back to opening the Search options tab when the search box is SELECTED,

    > or to allow the user to open the Search options tabs directly from the menu,

    > or to cause File Explorer to keep the Search options tab open,

    > or allow the user to change its default Search options - e.g., Current Folder, Contents, etc?

    :)

  2. File Explorer Search Not Working

I am trying to search in File Explorer (Windows Explorer, My Computer) and it will not find anything. I can copy text from a name in the list and paste it in the search box and it still finds nothing. I have looked at the suggestions that have been posted and nothing I find that is relative to this works. Anyone have any suggestions? I am running Win 10 Pro on an I3 coustom desktop computer.

Search for Missing files in File Explorer

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you are looking for a file named “Class” with the length of the file. However, currently File Explorer doesn’t have the option to search the files using the length.

You can follow the steps mentioned below to search for a file in File Explorer using the Size, Kind of file and other options.

    1. Press and hold Windows key + E to open
      File Explorer.
    2. Click on This PC on the left pane.
    3. Press F3 key to open Search options.
    4. You can select the Size,
      Kind
of file and other options and then, search for the file.

    Hope it helps.

Please reply with the status of the issue, we will be glad to help you further.

    Search Content of MHT files

    Hi David,

Most probably, this is a problem with the search and indexing of your Windows 10 computer. For us to provide the best resolution possible, we would like to clarify the following:

    • Are you trying to search the content of MHT files using Cortana?
    • Have you tried searching it using the File Explorer?
    • Are you using a third-party app to search for the content of MHT files?

As an initial troubleshooting step, we suggest that you run the troubleshooter for search and indexing. To run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter, follow these steps:

    • Click the Start button and select the Settings
      icon.
    • Choose Update & Security from the list.
    • Click Troubleshoot in the left pane of the window.
    • Under Find and fix other problems.
    • Select Search and Indexing and click Run the troubleshooter.

We'll keep an eye out for your response.
