Windows 10: File Explorer Setting Bugging Me

I'm sure there is a setting to change this behavior within File Explorer, but I haven't found it yet.

As an example, my Ripped CD Folders has 619 Subfolders within it. I prefer Details View, so when I open Ripped CDs, I have to scroll down to get very far through the list. I find what I'm looking for and open that folder, replacing the current pane (single folder/replace view). Once I'm finished, I click the back button and it returns to Ripped CDs, but the folder I was just browsing is located at the bottom of the pane.

This is what I'd like to change.

Instead, I would prefer the most recent opened subfolder to automatically appear at the top of the pane. This saves me a from having to always scroll down again. I'd rather scan what is visible before I have to scroll down, not before.

It makes sense that backing out from subfolder layers would return the current folder to the bottom of the pane, as it probably somehow serves as a placeholder/tracker as additional folders are created at the same level, eventually exceeding the visible pane. To return to the top of the pane might not be possible. But if I'm already at the end of the list, I can easily see that and again not need to scroll.

To illustrate, here is a screenshot and I have Big Head Todd & The Monsters selected:





I open the folder and grab what I need. Then I use the back button and here is where I am:





There is Big Head Todd at the bottom of the pane. I'd rather it automatically be in the first visible row within the pane.

File Explorer has gone crazy after last nights upgrade.

My only has icons instead of full descriptions. I can not get back to a point where I have tabs that actually say something. Please tell me how to get my view repaired? help... Help.... HELP!!!

 

Is there a way to change the highlight color of the address bar? (Win10)

This is bugging me vastly... No matter what color I choose for my theme, the text in my address bar of browsers (all of them) and file explorer is highlighted in a weird teal color that does not match the theme.

Every other text, or icons if in explorer, are highlighted in a normal nice blue color.

I can't find a setting to adjust this, and it really bugs me to have this teal color that does not match the rest of the theme.

I don't know whether it is possible to change exactly what you are asking (most likely not).

But have you tried enabling "Expand to open folder" option in Folder Options, View tab? That option will make File Explorer to automatiocally track your current location using folder tree in the left pane of File Explorer. This might make it much easier to navigate to the next folder using the left tree pane specifically.

I see from your screenshots that you have it disabled at this time.

Yes, I normally use "Expand", but was wondering whether there might be a setting I was missing.

There is no setting to force ONE file to always be at the top. But, you could rename the folder with a space before Big and it will sort alpha at top.

 

If you add 'Date Accessed' via View, add columns as I said, that puts your most recently accessed at the top, provided your view is sorted on that column.

 

True, but that won't guarantee it will stay first.

 

Great ideas, but not really suited to what I'm looking for. I don't want the file list to re-sort, but stay in the current order. The point for me is to be able to easily scan the folders beyond the most recent accessed folder, in order. Access folder # 125, make edits within, back out and have Folder #125 at the top row with #126 next, etc.

For my purposes, using Expand is fine.

That said, I'm grateful for the suggestions!

 

Puzzled- how can the folders stay in the same order when your requirement is:

- these seem inconsistent requirements.

 

If you look at the images above, you can see there are more than 600 subfolders in the parent. The folders are alphabetical, which is fine. Specifically, they're in my DropBox folder and I want to be able to visually scan the folders to see where they are in the sync process. So, if I see a folder 2/3 of the way down the pane, I want to open it, check on the changes, and then back out from the folder. But instead of the last accessed folder automatically appearing at the bottom of the pane, in the same order it was previously, I want the last accessed folder to appear at the top of the pane.

Look at the two screenshots above, and you will see the order of the folders is identical. The order of the folders hasn't changed and isn't the issue currently.

Sorting the folder list by various suggestions (last accessed, etc) will change the order and not accomplish what I was asking. I want the last accessed folder to appear at the top of the visible pane (not at the bottom) so I can continue visually scanning downward instead of having to scroll down every time. I don't want the last folder to appear at the beginning of the overall list, just the visible pane itself. I'll just go back to using Expand.

But I have another question now:

Is it possible to add comments to a Folder (not a file)? I found some similar queries on the issue, here's an old thread addressing what I'm asking about:

I'd like to be able to add additional information to each folder so as to be able to sort based upon those fields. Right-clicking where Name, #, Comments, etc are in the screenshot below provides additional columns for Folders, but I cannot access the fields to make changes within the folders themselves. This is easy to do with Files, but again I cannot figure out how to do this with folders. The columns used below were available to add. Some of them are rather strange and I suspect might be holdovers from ini files created in previous OS versions, but haven't dug that far in researching the issue to confirm.

The OP exlained quite clearly in the first message that the idea is to make File Explorer to automatically scroll the view so that last accessed folder appears at the top of the visible portion of a [very long] list. There's no need to "reorder" anything. And there's nothing inconsistent here.

Reordering folders would completely defeat the purpose of what the OP is trying to do.

 

Fine, I can't grasp what he wants and am happy to accept that.

- you can use the comments field in explorer, but need to use Advanced sharing, which means setting it as shared.
This may not be an approach you wish to take.

- no idea how usable it is. It claims win 10 compatibility.
