    Hmm, looking again, I'm not sure where I found that error I showed from Macrium. If I look in the Log tab of Macrium, last night's backup failed...

    The VSS log (shown as a child node of the above entry in Macrium's Log tab) ends with the following lines...

    ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->StartSnapshotSet(&m_latestSnapshotSetID)" failed.

    - Returned HRESULT = 0x80042316

    - Error text: VSS_E_SNAPSHOT_SET_IN_PROGRESS

    Completing the backup (BackupComplete) ...

    ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->BackupComplete(&pAsync)" failed.

    - Returned HRESULT = 0x80042301

    - Error text: VSS_E_BAD_STATE

    - Setting the VSS context to: 0x00000010

    ERROR: COM call "m_pVssObject->StartSnapshotSet(&m_latestSnapshotSetID)" failed.

    - Returned HRESULT = 0x80042316

    - Error text: VSS_E_SNAPSHOT_SET_IN_PROGRESS

    Don't know if any of that makes any difference.

    One problem at a time...

    You will survive a few hours without an automated backup. You can use copy/paste meanwhile.

    So, uninstall Macrium and Crashplan, and restart your system. You can install them back later on...

    How, usually, it takes from booting till the problem occurs?

    By the way, why are you running two backup solutions. it can leads to poor performance, as running two AV at the same time.

    I seem to have survived for a few days already!
    OK, will try it.
    Anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours.
    I use Macrium as it gives me a disk image. That way, if anything goes wrong, I could mount it as a drive, and browse the file structure. I use File History as an ongoing backup (with history). FH makes it easier to see the changes in a specific file, whereas the disk images make it easier to browse a whole file structure.

    I understand why running two AVs at the same time can cause problems, but why would running Macrium and FH cause a problem? One thing I forgot to tell you was that the Macrium backup is scheduled for 1am (when I am always in bed, I never ever work at that time!), so wouldn't clash with FH when I'm using the machine.

    Any comments? Thanks

    I tried disabling that, and still had the problem, so I don't think that's the issue.

    Can't live without VisualSVN, it's an intrinsic part of my work.

    Thanks for the suggestion though.

    Right now I've got the Macrium backup job scheduled for 1am, File History running, ESET and VisualSVn running, and that's about it. I've disabled Crashplan, and the machine is basically OK. It's a bit sluggish, but that could be because I manually ran the Macrium scheduled task, as it hadn't run for a few days.

    What do you think?

    I think you love backups so much *Smile

    When you finish the backup with Macrium, disable it.

    Then download Process Explorer of sysinternals tools. Run it then click File menu > Save As to save the content of running processes in a text file.

    I want to check what are the processes running on your machine, and be sure there is no kind of Macrium or crash plan still running ...

    No backup software running appart VisualSVN.

    Let's see now how the system will behave... If you notice any deterioration, take a trace.

    It'snot running as well as I would like right now. Even without the backup software running, Explorer is showing noticeable delays when I double-click, and often my double-clicks are ignored. There's still something causing a problem.

    Macrium has an option to fix VSS problems...

    Do you reckon it's safe to try this? I guess it will want me to reboot after it's done.

    Thanks again

    Go in the advanced power options and uncheck the Fast Startup option, it uses a hybrid hibernation some hardware doesn't play well with. It caused problems on one of the machines here this morning that seemed not to be connected to the main problem but was resolved by turning off the Fast Startup. *Cool

    Where do I find that option? My Power & Sleep options only offers me when to turn the screen off, and when the PC should sleep. I have additional power options, but that only shows me power plans. Changing the plan settings only gives the same two options (not sure what the point is, but that's another story).

    I'm on Windows 10 if that makes any difference.

    Thanks

    Macrium is still disabled. I made sure I wasn't running anything, then started the trace and clicked around in File Explorer. Most of my double-clicks were ignored first time, and I had to double-click again to get it to open the folder. Even when it did, there was a noticeable delay.

    You can download the trace here.

    Thanks again.

    By the way, what do you think about using the Macrium feature to fix VSS problems? Safe or not?
