File Explorer slow and Start menu icons not highlighting after update

Look in additional or advanced power options for choose what the power button does, change options currently unavailable, uncheck fast startup, this could cause problems you don't need to fix, your programs may work correctly after a cold boot. The point is, your programs are trying to start up from info saved when you shut down, this could be causing program data to not load. I have seen this on multiple machines, just try it, if it doesn't help nothing lost or gained...

In this trace, there is no High Disk activity due to VSS, but a high CPU I/O. I think this is another problem...

Question before I continue; Is explorer the only thing that hangs or any other program ?

I found that the High CPU usage is caused by QTTBar, as I told you earlier. When I look to your version it's 2.0 ! it's too old (2011)

I've the 1038.0.0.0 version on my computer !

check that by going to C:\Windows\assembly\ and search for "QTTabBar.ni.dll". in the file's properties, details table you'll find the file version.

    Install a newer version.

    zinou,

Interesting, I checked the QTTBar site and found the same version as I have. I then did a search for QTTBar and found that there is a completely separate version of it, which is the one you have. I've uninstalled the old and installed the new, so will see if that helps.

    Thanks

Yup, and so far the machine is behaving. Have to see how it goes over the next few hours, day, etc.

Fine... After you are sure the machine behaves correctly, try to enable the Backup Softwares again, to see if the VSS problem will occur again...

I think we have just fixed one part of the problem...

Well, it's still behaving itself, so we may have fixed more than just one thing! Macrium did its disk image last night, although File History still shows that it hasn't backed up for a month. Not sure why that is, although it was a few days after my first post here, so it could be something we did stopped it working.

<pause...> Ah, just noticed that Crashplan is still disabled, so maybe I spoke too soon. We'll need to see how things are when I update and enable that.

Thanks again for all the help.

Yes, enable crashplan, I think it's the process that causes the high disk usage trough VSS service !

Use the same version you had, to confirm the diagnosis...

Sigh, all was fine for a while, but now Explorer has stopped doing anything. I double-click, I get the busy cursor for a few seconds, and then I'm back where I was. When it does open a folder, it's slow. No high CPU, but the only way to navigate around is to right-click and choose Open. Painful.

However, I tried disabling the crashplan service, but it didn't help. Not sure where this leaves me now *Sad.

    Any ideas? Thanks

When you disable crash planer you must restart your system. Keep crash planer disabled for 48h to 72h.

I'm about to switch off for the weekend. I'm going to disable the service and see what happens when I start up again next week.

Thing that I don't understand is that it was all fine up until a few weeks ago. I hadn't touched CP at all, so why it would suddenly start causing problems is beyond me.

I'm almost at the stage of scrubbing the disk and reinstalling. I don't fancy that, as it takes a couple of days to get everything back on and configured, but it would give me a clean system.

Thanks again. I'll see how it goes next week before I do anything drastic.
