Windows 10: File Explorer slow and Start menu icons not highlighting after update

Thanks for the tip. I've just restarted, and have CP disabled. I'm going to leave it off, as if I have Macrium running each night, and if I can work out why File History isn't backing up my files, I will have enough for the moment. CP was a belt and braces approach.

I'm actually coming round to the thought of reinstalling Windows anyway. Apart form this VSS-related problem, I'm still having other issues, such as the problem with the Start menu I mentioned right at the beginning. Although it's a pain, a clean install would probably solve all of these issues.

Anyway, that wouldn't happen until I've made sure I've got everything ready, which will take me a couple of days. I'll see how the machine goes without CP in the meantime.

Why File History is not backing up your files is another problem... You have to solve one problem at a time.

thinking that a fresh install can help solve your problem, is not true all the time. If you reinstall the program that is the caused your system to misbehave, you will be back to where you've been.

So identify first what's the root cause and then acte...

If disabling CP results in a more responsive system, we can deal with the next problem ... and you can find an alternative to CP for backing up your files.

 

I know what you mean, but I think there are too many seemingly separate issues on this machine for it to have a simple problem. They all started around the time I installed Hyper-V and there was a major Windows update (both same day). I can't rollback the update, but have uninstalled Hyper-V and cleaned the folders, but still have a few separate problems. CP was never an issue before that, and I'm not convinced it of itself is an issue now. I think it's just showing problems because of some deeper problem.

As it happens, I wasn't going to install CP straight away when/if I reinstall. I was going to confirm that everything else was working fine for at least a week before even thinking of reinstalling it. A reinstall should get File history working again, and between that and Macrium, I can manage for a week.

If all is well after a week, and then I reinstall CP and have problems, well that would nail it. I can always uninstall it and look at something else then. If it works OK, then I can stick with what I've got.

However, first I want to make sure that the next few days goes smoothly with CP disabled. If I have any problems now, it would point to something else going here apart from CP.

Sad to say, it's playing up again. File Explorer is not very responsive, and double-clicks are largely considered as single-clicks. Even right-clicking doesn't always work, and when it does, it takes an age.

No significant CPU activity.

CP is still disabled, and I have rebooted since disabling it.

A reinstall is looking more and more likely *Sad
