Windows 10: File Explorer --- want to see subfolders in left panel

For the last few decades, File Explorer has displayed my folders like this: This PC> Documents> subfolder> subfolder> subfolder> Downloads> subfolder> subfolder> Pictures> subfolder> subfolder > Etc. However, in the last week or two, something changed. Now it looks like this: Documents [pin icon and no “>” to see subfolders]Etc. This PC> Windows C My goal is to see the > option for Documents and other folders. I can get to the desired view under This PC by selecting Windows, then Users, then username, then D

Yes, I meant the second part of 2.

I would like to be able in the left panel to expand folders I've pinned there and see the subfolders there, the tree. My choice now is going through: This PC, Windows, User, Owner, before finally getting to the top of my tree and having to expand down further.

My frequently used folders that have subfolders are under Quick Access, but they expand into the right window, obliterating any list already there of files. Also, I have many subfolders and don't want to pin them all to Quick access.

Ideal: expand one folder in left panel into a tree of its subfolders, and open a subfolder to have the files listed in the right panel. Expand another folder in left panel without disturbing the files in the right panel, copy or move files from the right
folder to a folder now in view in left panel.

This is what is accomplished with the long-winded process of starting with This PC. In Windows 7 it was very easy. Lost it in Windows 8.1.

In File Explorer, Is there any way to list/view all files in subfolders of a folder, without using command line or windows search? Thank you

 

File names in Left Panel of File Explorer


A brief apology: I'm probably too old to mess with this stuff (pulling 80,) but I like to try. Please be patient with me, and ask for details if I am not stating my problem clearly. I have searched, but could not find this problem already discussed in this forum.
I just installed Windows 10. Not sure if I like it, but I'm trying hard.
Problem: When I go to File Explorer, in the left panel, when I click on a folder name, the contents of that folder (both sub-folders and files) show in the right panel.
In the left panel, when I click on ">" beside a folder name, it will expand in the left panel showing the sub-folders, but not "loose files".
I could have sworn that in earlier versions of Windows the files also showed.
Is there a option setting somewhere to change this behavior and to show the files also in the left panel?
