Windows 10: File Explorer - Word and Excel Files not responding

When I open File Explorer I can see all my folders and documents. If, for example, I open a folder in One Drive and choose a word or excel file, it will not open. I get the message that the file folder is not responding. I am able to access the files by using Excel or Word. I am using Windows 10, 64 bit and Office 365.

File explorer not responding

I just bought a new laptop with Windows 10 installed. File explorer does not respond when I am trying to open a new file (Excel, Word, etc.). The only files I can open from File Explorer are those in Excel compatibility mode (with previous versions of
Excel). This problem of File Explore not responding seems to be lagging at Microsoft as I have seen others having the same problem with no clear path to a solution (if any). My laptop is still pretty much empty since I just received it. Can Microsoft fix this
?

 

Excel & File Explorer

I can no longer open any Excel files in File Explorer. As from today I have to separately open Excel first and then go back to File Explorer. This problem only started today. Can I set up my laptop (Windows 10) so that Excel & Word automatically launch
as soon as I open File Explorer.

• What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?
• Are the Excel and Word documents the only files affected?
