    File History New Computer

I have a my files backed up to a NAS drive from my old computer using File History.

I then tried to restore the latest backup to my new computer using Restore. The new PC recognized the correct drive on the NAS and Its started perfectly but did not complete.

When I attempted to restart I got error "File History could not reassociate with file history data"

After several failed attempts, I tried to start over by first deleting all of the files that had been copied on the new computer to avoid restoring duplicates. Now, when I attempt to recover from the NAS, file history recognizes only what can be best described as a "stub history", meaning a small backup of the standard windows file folders on the new computer. It only finds small, existing file backups from the new computer, but not the one from the old computer.

Is there any way to clean out the memory that file history has, and start over with a fresh recovery from the NAS of the files backed up from the old computer.

    Thank you,

    :)

  2. How to stop File History on the old drive and start File History on a new drive?

    I use the external drive
for File History and have a lot of information there. I want to restart the File History process on a new drive and place the previous File History drive off-site.

Please suggest the steps to stop File History on the old drive and start File History on a new drive.

    File History restart

    Hi Jim,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community forums.

To change the backup drive for File History, the current process should be stopped. I suggest you to try the steps listed below to stop file history on an older drive and restart it on a new drive:

    Change File History backup drive:

    • Open Settings and navigate to Update & Security > Backup.
    • Click on More Options, scroll down to locate
Backup to a different drive section, and choose Stop Using Drive.
    • Plug in the new storage drive, navigate to Settings > Update & Security > Backup,
      and choose Add a Drive.
    • Restart File History and configure it by referring to the article

    Hope it helps.

    New problem with File History!

    Hi,

To better assist you with your concern, I would like to ask few information:

    • Which version of Windows are you using?
    • Were there any recent changes that happened on your computer?
    • Are you receiving any error messages? If yes, what is the exact error message?

You may also go to File History logs to check if there are any Warnings or Errors. To check logs, follow the steps below:

    • Go to Control Panel.
    • Click on File History.
    • On the left hand side, click on Advanced Settings.
    • In the Advanced Settings page, click on Open File History event logs to view recent events or errors.
    • Check if there are any Warnings or Errors showing.
