Windows 10: file history (previous versions (of files)) shows the earliest previous version is 1 month...

I just wanted to use previous versions because I'm missing some edits. Looking into "previous versions" for the matching file I can see the earliest bacup being 12/21/2018 (today is 1/7/2019).

"Backup options" shows me that backup is set for "every hour".

backup folders includes Documents.

The file in question is not directly in Documents but inside a subfolder of Documents.

A folder below this subfolder has been created using git running inside the "bash-on-windows" emulation with one directory being named aux (not a legal filename in win32) -- which I need to delete every time I use visual C++ in this folder, otherwise rebuild is constant.


Could this have caused the backup to go crazy?

Or do I need to list every sub-directory of Documents in order to have them backed up?

Previous version history file


Hello,

I am new to the forum and currently encountering a problem restoring files from the shadow volume. I do not see any version history when I click the previous version history tab. Using a third party tool like shadowexplorer I am able to see the previous versions. Exporting the files out from the shadow volume also is incomplete with file errors. Any way for me to restore fully some files from the shadow copies ?

With regard to you query about restoring previous version of a file, please follow the methods below:

Method 1: Restore Previous version

• Right-click the file.
• Select Restore Previous versions.
• Click on Previous Versions tab.
• You may see a list of older copies of the file available.

Method 2:

You may also check the File History. File History saves copies of your files so you can get them back if they're lost or damaged.

• Press Windows key + X.
• Click on Control Panel.
• Select All Control Panel Items.
• Click on File History.
• Select Restore personal files.

Previous Versions

Previous version with regards to files. we have it setup on our file servers.

We have modified the number of previous versions that are kept.

Windows XP\2003 can see all previous versions. Windows 7+\2008+ however cannot see any more than I think it is 32.

It lists the oldest first.

This means that if we try to recover from previous versions we usually need to use command line as the gui is showing versions that are too old.
