    Hi!

Thanks for the tip! Had an eye on Macrium already, also before this latest Windows 10 saga started. What holds me off a bit is that the Win 10 imager is a straight forward tool. It never failed, and restoring is possible with any Windows 10 boot stick / installation medium. Perfect. Also, what I understand from the Macrium website is that you get the full features including incremental backups only by running it under Win 10. And yes, then also VSS will be used. So making images via the Macrium bootstick might be a great workaround for the short term, it's probably not for the long run. Also: the Macrium bootstick is based on a Windows PE-environment. Macrium proudly announces at their site a new version of the software will be available from the 27th on. Including the latest Win PE-environment. Which actually might also contain the VSS-problems.

Nevertheless, I will consider it, since there are virtually no other options anymore. Sadly enough, because wcifs and VSS crash silently, most people will never know their backups are worth nothing. I would also never have gotten the idea to run an image tool outside Windows 10 itself, because there where never problems with creating images in Windows itself. :-/ Besides, 'only' one problem is solved with this solution of course. Incremental file backups and system restore points still don't work then, just like probably many things that use wcifs and vss.

    anyway, Thanks again!

    Hi,

Most here would disagree there. Without VSS working properly it will fail.

Repair the install first then make a backup. If repair fails then that would indicate a corrupted source too.

    Cheers, *Wink

if you have the paid version of Macrium you can do differential and incremental backups using the USB stick. I just checked. Just click on the last full version backup and select other tasks. From there you can select differential or incremental. I'll be doing that until MS fixes this issue.

    Hi!

Of course VSS is the key to success. But that basically never failed. Should never fail, because it is used a lot in Windows 10. Imaging is only one of the things it is rather practical for. VSS can and will also be used to live update system files. Not sure here, but I think even Office 365/2016 is using it for updating Office in the background while in use. And after asking around this weekend a bit, I did not meet anyone who was NOT having the bug. Their computers, I mean File System Filter 'wcifs' EVENT ID 4 :) Reinstalling doesn't help, because the error returns immediately after obligatory updates. So creating a clean environment is not easy or even not possible since the cause of the problem is still unknown.

Ok, thanks for the info! Can you actually use Macrium and the standard Windows 10 imager together? I mean: imagine MS would repair the issue somehow, can I make an image then with the Win 10 imager ALSO? Then I would make some backup-schedule with weekly Macrium images and once per month a Windows-imager image. Extra safety! File System Filter 'wcifs' EVENT ID 4 :) Now we know that a simple app update can break something vital in 10, that might be just a bit more then luxury alone... :-/

    Hi,

Sure, you can run both but you better make sure the restore part works too.

Sorry I can't empathize much with this issue. I did came across it personally and restoring the image to a healthy status always solve it.

What version of W10 re you referring to ?

    Cheers, *Wink

Both home and pro. Agree that restoring an image is the way to go in a case like this. First thing I tried. Worked for 5 seconds, then the app updates arrived and bam.

    Hi,

Apps can be reinstalled via the "Store". Tried that ?

    Hi!

yes, with all the latest and greatest features *Wink The thing is: I don't use apps from the store at all. The built-in apps are limited removable/reinstallable. The ones that I could remove, I did. So I guess it's in one of the obligatory ones.

A few weeks ago I used the Acronis Cleanup Tool to remove True Image 2015 and ended up breaking VSS on all of my PCs. I could no longer create system images with Macrium nor could I create restore points. Fortunately I was able to restore my systems using backup images. In researching this issue, I learned that VSS is used for creating system images by Macrium only when creating an image from within a running Windows system. Imaging from thier USB Rescue stick does not utilize VSS because it's is not dealing with a "live" system. So full, differential, and incremental images created with their rescue stick should work just fine. I hope this gives everyone some piece of mind that we do have an alternative until MS sorts out the system restore mess. Let's hope the fix is quick.

    Hi!

thanks for the info! Only thing that makes me hesitant is to spend another $60-something for software to make up for yet another flaw in Windows 10. I have a bit enough of that, to be honest. :-/

I just restored an image from 2017-01-14 to my Dell Inspiron laptop and tried creating a restore point and then restored form it. It was successful so whatever app update killed the restore point process happened after that date.
