Files deleted from desktop leave remnants.

After the update to Windows 10 2004 - whenever I delete a file from the desktop - it comes back. Not as the original file, but as some token off the file.

Sometimes the file comes back as soon and the screen sleeps, sometimes the next day. There appears to be some process than scans folders and makes odd extension/attribute versions of what was deleted become visible.

The process goes something like this:

1: drag or save an image or pdf or txt to the desktop source doesn't seem to matter

2: open in editor, viewer, paint application doesn't seem to matter

    3: close from application

    4: delete the file

5: check back later - there is an icon in the spot the file was at -

6: select the new icon, open or delete and the new icon reports "can't be opened/deleted"

7: right click the desktop and REFRESH the display, icon is gone

This behavior began immediately after installing the 2004 update. I have since done a clean install of the latest 2004. The behavior persists in the new, fresh, clean install wiped the OS disk prior to installation.

    :)

  3. Cant Delete Files From Desktop

Well, ran into a weird bug with vista, for some reason i cant delete files from desktop, this normaly happens to .exe files, the ONLY fix seems to be to KILL explorer.exe, and delete the file, then restat explorer, anybody got any idea why this happens?

    Cannot delete files in Temp

Exactly Jim... which is why I had him knock-out all existing processes... OR try to.

The performance lib counters temp file though, it's usually controlleable via extctrlst.exe (reskit tool I mentioned above)!

That is so the majority of HKEY_DYN_DATA isn't being formed in memory (it's a "fake" registry hive basically & has no corresponding on-disk file)... that SHOULD take of that as well. The WMI counter is the ONLY one that you really may have trouble setting as "no longer generating", because it always restarts itself anyhow.

(There's ways to stall that too, WBEM folder stuff, but it creates more problems than its worth, because it affects other things, because once I removed its folders from the SYSTEM %PATH% & it stopped working alright, but a lot of other stuff did too!)

*Smile Files deleted from desktop leave remnants. :)

    * It's not working on his end though yet & I just read that now on edit!

So, something is STILL generating those temp files & the correct process hasn't been stalled yet so they are no longer locked... so, onto the next step.

    POST STARTER:

Can you provide us a list of your normally running processes via a screenprint of taskmgr.exe's PROCESSES tab?

    APK

P.S.=> xman makes a GOOD solid point - they're files that apps use, temporarily, & sometimes do NOT clean them up properly... leaving remnants that SHOULD be non-locked by a reboot... technically.

This includes performance counter generations... they SHOULD go away @ reboot... but, if not, this is the type of thing to do to burn them... apk
