Files in C: drive automatically compressing? Issue back again?

Okay, I am getting really pissed.

This morning I opened my pc to find out Windows 10 decided to compress all my files on my pc. I never asked for this and I have never been asked. Why? Where is the logic behind it and where am I as a customer

I am getting tired of all these updates lately that are changing my system. Last year Office kept on changing an now Windows. I want my files to be decompressed again and no it ain't a option to do them one by one! I making backups of my whole file system to now find out they are compressed in my backup.

Besides that the performance of my Visual Studio projects in down the drain. Another hour just solving issues being causes because somebody at Microsoft messed up. I am spending more and more time on changing things back due to all kind of Windows updates that I can't stop! Thanks....

    :)

  2. Files in C: drive automatically compressing?

As you may already know, if this feature is on, every new folder/file you add starts off automatically compressed. If you would like to turn it off for the whole drive, kindly follow these steps:

    • Start File Explorer . In the left pane, right-click on the drive that you would not want to be compressed.
    • Click Properties.
    • Make sure that the Compress this drive to save disk space box is unchecked.
    • Click OK then Apply.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

Files in C: drive automatically compressing?

So here is what I have found.

Existing machine was slow and all files were being compressed

    • Tried to uncompress all files
    • Early the next day the files were re-compressed
    • Applied latest 1809 updates
    • Machine still showed to be compressing files
    • Re-Re-uncompressed all files bypassing all errors on specific files showing they could not be uncompressed
    • Rebooted
    • Cleared the %temp% file
    • Ran a Disk cleanup that included over 10gb of compressed drive information and old versions of windows etc
    • Rebooted again

When the machine booted all desktop files were still showing dual arrows and "compressed"

Withing 5 minutes of the reboot the arrows vanish while I was watching. Now the computer is no longer acting sluggish and no files have re-compressed themselves.

I think this is a larger issue that probably needs to be looked into. Out of my 20 machines I admin this is the 2nd that has had this exact same problem.

Files in C: drive automatically compressing? Issue back again?

Files in C: drive automatically compressing?

Have seen this on two machines now. Wake machine to find all files on C drive compressed. Dual blue arrows on every file and folder. Go to settings on the drive and find Compress File is checked. None of our computers have ever
had compression set as it messes with some of our programs we use.

Uncheck it - Message pops up to uncompress, errors on sys file then hit ignore and 2hrs later files are uncompressed. Wake computer the next morning and all files are compressed again and C: drive setting page has compression checked
    again.

Cannot lie - this is strange. The first computer that did this to me, I applied all the latest updates to Win 10 and the next day we woke the computer thinking it was going to need to be blown away and redone only to find no compressed
    files. ?? Aliens?
